The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has moved swiftly to dispel public confusion and concern surrounding its current social grant review process, assuring beneficiaries that no social grant payments have been suspended.

Reviews are not new, SASSA said, and are regularly conducted under Regulation 30 of the Act to uphold the integrity of the social assistance programme.

A co-ordinated intelligence-driven operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Metro Police has dealt a major blow to the drug trade in Phoenix, with the takedown of a drug-dealing syndicate and the arrest of its alleged supplier.

During the operation, authorities seized methcathinone - commonly referred to as ‘Cat’ - with an estimated street value of R13, 000.

Around 200 informal structures were destroyed, resulting in 300 people, including children, being displaced. The fire is believed to have been caused by a burning brazier, commonly known as an imbawula.

The blaze ravaged the settlement, leaving a trail of destruction. Teams worked hard to extinguish the blaze.

Steaming hot meals and the soft weight of blankets brought much-needed warmth to hundreds in Turffontein, this week, as the Moti Cares Foundation joined hands with Meals on Wheels Community Services South Africa to deliver critical aid to 500 residents in need.

Interventions are in full swing to assist victims of the fire that tore through the Dakota Informal Settlement in Isipingo on July 8, leaving over 400 people homeless and more than 200 structures destroyed.
