Dear Musicians
Distribution VS Publishing
Too many artists believe that once they’ve distributed their music, they’re automatically published — but that’s not true. Distribution and publishing are two completely different parts of the music business, and if you don’t understand the difference, you might be making money you’ll never see.
Distribution is all about availability. It’s the process of getting your song onto streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Deezer so fans can listen, buy, and share. Once your song is live, the distributor collects your streaming and download revenue — that’s it.
Publishing, on the other hand, is about ownership and rights. It ensures you get paid every time your music is performed publicly — on radio, TV, film, YouTube, or even when a DJ plays it at a club. Your publisher registers your music with organizations like SAMRO, CAPASSO, and others worldwide. They track every use of your song and make sure your royalties reach you. So, before you celebrate your distribution, make sure your publishing is handled too — because one gives you exposure, but the other gives you income.
🎯 Lesson: Distribution gets your music out, publishing gets your money in. Learn both — and you’ll own your career from every angle.
