Mthokozisi "Muchmello" Gcabashe: Biography
Born and raised in the vibrant township of Dududu in KwaZulu-Natal, Mthokozisi Gcabashe, known professionally as Muchmello, is a versatile musician with a deep-rooted passion for music. His journey began with the nostalgic sounds of old-school Kwaito, inspired by legends like Zola 7 and Bricks. This early influence sparked a fire in him, leading him to start writing his own music in 2012.
The following year, while attending his first year at UKZN, he was finally able to afford studio sessions and began recording his craft. In 2014, Muchmello co-founded the crew Entalpy with fellow artist Ntuthuko Ngcobo. The duo quickly gained traction, and their 2015 EP became a street sensation, landing them a record deal with Ekandosi Records. Entalpy’s success led to extensive gigging and radio airplay, solidifying their name in the industry.
Muchmello's musical path took a new turn in 2018 when he moved to Johannesburg, which led to the amicable split of Entalpy. Before the split, the group released their final track, "Turn Up (Re Up)," which featured the talented MusiholiQ. During his time in KZN, Muchmello also collaborated with Sbusiso Gumede, also known as Plan B.
In 2019, he connected with producer Zamakuhle "Emzee de Pro" Ngubane. Their friendship, built on a mutual respect for each other's work and shared advice about the music industry, soon evolved into a powerful creative partnership. Their collaboration blossomed, with Muchmello as the artist and Emzee as the producer, and their first joint track, "Omandela," marked the beginning of their musical synergy.
Muchmello's artistry extends beyond the boundaries of a single genre. While deeply rooted in hip-hop, he considers himself a true artist, exploring sounds from across the musical spectrum. His versatility is showcased in his Gqomiyano songs, including collaborations with Queenasse, which highlight his ability to adapt and innovate within the ever-evolving South African.
