SAPS WARNS: THINK BEFORE YOU POST

The South African Police Service has warned the public about creating or sharing AI-generated images showing people in police uniforms or appearing to be arrested.

SAPS says realistic AI and face-swapping images could be mistaken for genuine photographs and potentially be used to mislead, deceive, impersonate or damage someone’s reputation.

The police service has also reminded the public that police uniforms, badges and insignia are legally protected.

However, SAPS stressed that simply creating an AI-generated image does not automatically constitute a crime — how the image is used and whether it is intended to deceive or impersonate will be important.

WHO WILL TAKE DURBAN?

The battle for control of eThekwini is heating up ahead of the November 4 local government elections, with political heavyweights from the ANC, DA, IFP, EFF, MK Party and ActionSA entering the mayoral race.

But can the ANC hold on to eThekwini, can the DA make a breakthrough, or will a divided opposition vote result in another coalition?

R20m Metro Police jobs-for-cash claim challenged

A sensational claim that R20 million was paid in an alleged jobs-for-cash scheme involving Durban Metro Police has been challenged by eThekwini Municipality.

City Manager Musa Mbhele says the investigation referred to R420 000 allegedly paid to one individual, while warning that allegations must be tested before being treated as fact.

The controversy has intensified political pressure for the release of the forensic report, with opposition parties demanding transparency and accountability.

The City is also drawing a distinction between the current allegations and an older 2019 Nexus forensic investigation into irregularities in an earlier Metro Police recruitment process.
