Across most programs, its main function is to open a Find/Search box so you can search for text within the current document, page, or window.

Common uses by app:

- Web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari): Opens the Find bar to search for words on the current webpage
- Microsoft Word, Google Docs: Opens the Navigation/Find pane to search for text in the document
- Excel: Opens the "Find and Replace" dialog to search for data in cells
- PDF readers (Adobe, etc.): Search for text within the PDF
- File Explorer/Windows: Opens the search box to find files/folders
- VS Code, programming IDEs: Find text in the current file

Basically, if you need to search for something, Ctrl + F is your shortcut.

Main functions:

1. Paste text or files: Takes whatever you last copied or cut and inserts it at your cursor or current location.
- Copy with Ctrl+C, cut with Ctrl+X, then paste with Ctrl+V
2. *Works almost everywhere*:
- Word docs, Google Docs, emails → pastes text/formatting
- File Explorer/Finder → pastes files or folders you copied
- Photoshop, code editors, browsers → pastes images, code, links
3. Clipboard dependent: It pastes whatever is currently stored in your clipboard. On Windows 10/11, Win+V opens clipboard history to paste older items too.

Pro tip: Ctrl+Shift+V in many apps = _Paste without formatting_, so it matches the destination style instead of keeping the original fonts/colors.

In most programs, *Ctrl + D* does different things depending on context. Common functions:

Web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox):
- Bookmark the current page / Add to favorites

Microsoft Word, Google Docs:
- Open the Font dialog box to change font, size, effects

Excel:
- Fill Down – copies the content/formula from the cell above into selected cells below

Linux/Unix terminal:
- Send EOF (End of File) – logs out of the current shell or ends input

PowerPoint:
- Duplicate the selected object/slide

It toggles bold formatting on/off for selected text. If nothing's selected, it turns on bold for whatever you type next.

Where it works:
- Word processors* - Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice: makes text bold
- Email - Gmail, Outlook: bolds selected text while composing
- Spreadsheets - Excel, Sheets: bolds cell contents
- Note apps - OneNote, Notion, Slack: applies bold formatting

Other apps where Ctrl + B does something different:
- Chrome/Firefox - Show/hide the bookmarks bar
- Photoshop - Color Balance tool
- VS Code/terminals - Often moves cursor back one character

But 90% of the time, people use it for bold.

On Mac it's Cmd + B.

What it does:
Selects every item, all text, or all content in whatever window or app you're currently using.

Common uses:

- Documents - Word, Google Docs, PDFs: highlights all text
- Files/Folders - File Explorer or Finder: selects every file in the folder
- Browsers- Chrome, Safari, Firefox: selects all text/images on the page
- Spreadsheets - Excel, Sheets: selects all cells in the sheet
- Email - Gmail, Outlook: selects all emails in the current view
- Design/Code editors - Photoshop, VS Code: selects all elements or code

Once everything's selected, you can then Ctrl + C to copy, Ctrl + X to cut, Delete to remove, or apply formatting to all of it.

Ctrl + C does a few different things depending on where you press it:

1. Copy
This is the one everyone knows.
- What it does: Copies selected text, files, images, etc. to your clipboard
- Use with: Ctrl + V to paste
- Works in: Word docs, browsers, file explorers, most apps

2. Cancel / Stop a process
- In terminals/command line: Sends an "interrupt signal" that stops whatever program is currently running. Super handy if a script is stuck or taking too long
- In some apps: Cancels the current operation or dialog box

3. Generate the End-of-Text character
- In older systems/programming: Ctrl + C sends ASCII code `ETX` = End of Text. Some apps still use this to signal "stop input"

Quick tip: On Mac, most of these are Cmd + C instead of Ctrl + C
