"My company BigFishMedia is in the marketing game. Now marketing is pretty abstract, playing with how words and images are used to position products and services so they stand out just right. It involves a lot of ā€œsmoke and mirrorsā€, digital tricks and the truth is Iā€™d have a hard time explaining what I actually do in a day because the work is so varied, technical and intangible.
For years now, Iā€™ve said that I want to make fly rods or wooden furniture, even though Iā€™m not particularly skilled with handiwork. Deep down, I know the reason is that as we have grown as a business, Iā€™ve become the equivalent of an assembly line worker who only handles certain parts of a process, never getting to see what the final product looks like when it finally falls off the conveyor belt at the far end of the factory ready to be packaged and marketed by a company like ours, I suppose.
Anyway, a review we received yesterday helped me see our work in a far less abstract, much more tangible way and it reminded me that what we really do is help build businesses and support the owners and their respective teams, who depend on them. This has always been the essence of Big Fish Digital Media where ā€œitā€™s not just business, itā€™s personalā€.
It really made my day because you see everyone needs to do something purposeful and itā€™s nice to see our craftsmanship take such a beautiful shape.
