A harrowing ordeal for a 34-year-old woman came to an end when she managed to escape from her captor, leading to the arrest of a 34-year-old suspect. The suspect appeared at the Nkomazi Magistrate's court in Tonga on January 8, 2025, facing charges of kidnapping and r**e. The matter was postponed to January 15, 2025, for a formal bail application.
According to reports, the victim was kidnapped on December 8, 2024, and held captive for three days. During this time, she was allegedly r**ed and threatened not to report the incident. However, the victim's bravery and determination led her to escape from her captor and report the matter to the police.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the police for arresting the suspect. General Mkhwanazi also issued a stern warning to those engaging in criminal activities, stating that the law will take its course without fear or favor.
The SAPS is committed to ensuring that justice is served and perpetrators of heinous crimes are brought to book," General Mkhwanazi said. "We applaud the bravery of the victim and encourage all victims of crime to report incidents to the police."
In a separate incident, a 37-year-old suspect was arrested on January 9, 2025, for a r**e case that occurred in May 2015 at Pienaar. The suspect appeared at the Nelspruit District Court on January 10, 2025, and the matter was postponed to January 15, 2025.
These arrests demonstrate the commitment of the South African Police Service to combating crime and ensuring justice for victims. As General Mkhwanazi emphasized, "Police officials should always be exemplary in the manner that they conduct themselves. Any member who crosses the line should know that there will be consequences."
