Tragic death of Limpopo woman who overcame rare jaw tumor sparks murder investigation
Meida Ramuhala, 42, a Limpopo woman whose life was transformed by surgery for a rare jaw tumor, has been found murdered at her sisterβs home in Ha Mudimeli village.
Police have arrested a 59-year-old man in connection with her death, which is under investigation.
Ramuhala gained national attention in 2021 after undergoing surgery for a Mandibular Odontogenic Tumor, or Ameloblastoma, through the Provincial Rural Health Matters Outreach Programme.
In 2022, the Collen Mashawana Foundation donated a fully furnished house to her.
Ameloblastoma is a rare but aggressive tumor affecting the jaw, often requiring extensive surgery and, in some cases, reconstruction.
While benign, it can distort facial structure and recur if not fully removed.
Her death highlights the ongoing challenges South Africa faces with violent crime and pressures on the public healthcare system, including staff shortages and surgical backlogs.
Premier Phophi Ramathuba, who oversaw the outreach programme before becoming Limpopo Premier, expressed deep shock, while the Collen Mashawana Foundation conveyed sadness over the loss.
The Ramuhala family now faces the sudden and violent loss of a woman who had become a symbol of medical hope and resilience in the province.
