Why East Africa is becoming the Indo-Pacific’s new front

, , and beyond are connecting to Asian geopolitics… and appetites.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu attends the Extraordinary Joint Regional Summit between the heads of state from the Southern African Development Community and the East African Community at the State House in Dar es Salaam

East Africa is not the first place that comes to mind when the Indo-Pacific is mentioned. The term is usually used to frame the Sino-American rivalry in Asia and its familiar flashpoints: Taiwan, the South China Sea, and India’s strategic alignment.

The future of East Africa sits at the heart of competition for the Indo-Pacific. For policymakers, this should mean ever deeper engagement; for local countries, it is an opportunity to use the fragmentation of a more multipolar world to advance their developmental agendas.

says it planted 700 million trees in a single day.

Not in a year.

Not in a month.

One day.

The huge effort was part of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy campaign, a national project created to fight deforestation, restore damaged land, and bring more green cover back to the country.

Across Ethiopia, people were encouraged to take part.

employees.

Entire communities.

The goal was simple but massive:

plant hundreds of millions of seedlings in just 24 hours.

If true, the number is almost impossible to picture.

700 million trees is more than the population of most continents.

It is forests being started in a single day.

It is shade for future generations.

It is roots holding soil in place.

It is cleaner air, cooler land, and a country trying to rebuild nature at a scale most people would never even imagine.

Of course, planting trees is only the beginning.

They still have to survive.

They still need water, care, and protection.

But even then, the message is powerful.

A country looked at climate change, deforestation, and land damage, and decided to respond with something simple:

millions of people.

millions of hands.

hundreds of millions of trees.

Sometimes the biggest changes start with putting one seedling in the ground.
