Another Reason East London Is Awesome: Another piece of amazing art!

Tucked away behind tall trees on St Marks Road sits one of East London’s quiet treasures, the Ann Bryant Art Gallery. Be honest, you have probably driven past it numerous times before you actually realised what that old building actually,let me tell you something,once you step through those old wooden doors, something shifts.

The building itself feels like a piece of art. The floors creak, the ceilings stretch high, and the walls are alive with colour and emotion. Every room holds the work of South African artists, some well known and others still finding their place, each one telling a story in their own way.

The gallery was once the home of Ann Bryant herself, a well-known East London resident who loved art deeply. After her passing, the house was gifted to the city so that her love for art could live on. Today, it stands as one of the oldest and most respected art galleries in the Eastern Cape.

It’s the feeling you get that is truly magical. There’s a calmness that settles over you, a quiet pride that feels so uniquely East London. You can almost feel the city’s creative heartbeat in that space, steady and full of soul.

It’s proof that you don’t need to go to Joburg or Cape Town to experience real art. It’s right here, in our city, quietly celebrating beauty, talent, and imagination.

Its a piece of the puzzle that makes East London freaking awesome!

Another reason East London is awesome: Turns out, greatness has a school uniform, and it’s black and white

If you’ve ever driven down Lukin Road in rugby season and heard a group of boys belting out the school song like they’re auditioning for Gladiator, you’ve probably passed Selborne College,one of East London’s proudest institutions.

Founded way back in 1872, Selborne started out as a humble school for just thirteen boys. Over the decades, it grew into something far more than classrooms and cricket fields. It became a brotherhood, a place where values like honour, respect, and courage weren’t just words painted on a wall, but something you were expected to live by, embedded in the soul of every boy that was part of the Selborne story.

There’s something powerful about a school that’s been around for over 150 years, weathering wars, change, and generations of teenage energy. From rugby legends to business leaders and everyday heroes, Selborne has shaped men who’ve gone out and carried a piece of East London with them wherever they’ve ended up.

And if you’ve ever watched the First XV run out on a Saturday, you’ll know , there’s nothing quite like hearing young boys scream with pride. Literally the whole of East London stops when Selborne are playing. Goosebumps are definitely guaranteed.

This serves to remind me that this school has its legacy stitched into East London’s story. And that’s another reason East London is awesome.

Another reason East London is awesome: We found the fish that was hiding for millions of years

If you want to see something really awesome, take the family to the East London Museum and you’ll find it,the legendary Coelacanth. Floating behind the glass like some prehistoric celebrity, just chilling as if it didn’t disappear from history for 65 million years.

Twas the year 1938, a young curator named Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer got a call from a local trawler captain who’d hauled up something strange off our coast. She took one look and thought, “Well, that’s definitely not tonight’s dinner.” Turns out, she’d just rediscovered a fish the world thought was long gone,a fossil with fins.

That day, East London became the centre of the scientific universe. Not Cape Town, not Joburg,East London baby!A city where a museum curator outshone the world’s top scientists, all because she trusted her gut and didn’t toss the weird fish back to sea.

Every time I drive past the museum, I can’t help but smile. It’s proof that you don’t need a fancy lab or a global platform to make history,sometimes all it takes is curiosity, courage, and a little bit of East London magic.

Only in East London could a “strange-looking fish” become world-famous. And that’s another reason East London is awesome.

Another reason East London is Awesome: Gonubie.

Every time I head down that hill and catch the first glimpse of the ocean, something in me just settles. It’s like my whole body exhales. There’s a rhythm to Gonubie that I can’t quite explain; it’s calm but alive, peaceful but full of energy.

I’ve spent so many mornings there, coffee in hand, just watching the sun climb over the water. Sometimes I’ll walk the boardwalk, listening to the sound of waves breaking, taking in the fresh sea air, and be humbled that every day is

What I love most is how everyone there seems to carry the same kind of quiet joy. Despite its challenges, Gonubie has a way of speaking to your soul, making you feel part of something big, although we are so tiny. It’s the kind of place that reminds you life doesn’t need to be complicated to be good.

For me, Gonubie isn’t just a beach. It’s a reset button. A reminder that the best things in life are often right where you are. And that’s just another reason East London is, without question, AWESOME

Another Reason East London is Awesome! (Why not brag a bit)

Okay, hear me out,East London is awesome we know that, one of the reasons might just blow your mind. Have you ever stood at Nahoon Point and really looked at the ocean? Not just glanced. Like, actually soaked it in.

Here’s the thing: two oceans basically meet here. The Agulhas Current, warm and powerful, rushes down from the north, while cooler waters sneak up from the south. It’s like nature hit shuffle, and the mix? Pure magic. You’ll notice it in the water, the waves, the vibe, as Ace Ventura says "Its alive."

One morning, I watched the sunrise over the reef, dolphins cutting through the surf like they owned the place. The waves? Perfect. Powerful. Made for surfing legends, but also just…for feeling part of something bigger that ourselves. And in winter? The sardines migrate past here in billions,and with them come whales, sharks, and birds. Nature throwing a massive, free show for us humans.

Here’s why this is awesome: not every city gets to live where oceans collide, where the energy is tangible.

And I’m lucky enough to call it home.

This weekend, my son and I dropped some dog food into a cart for EL Pet Pals. It was such a small gesture, but it got me thinking about the incredible gift animals give us every single day-LOVE!

Pets don’t care what car you drive, what job you have, or if you’ve had the best or worst day. To them, you are their whole world. Their love is pure, unconditional, and healing in ways we can’t always explain.

And that’s the beauty of it, when we rescue them, they often rescue us right back. They remind us of joy in the simple moments, of loyalty without conditions, and of the power of connection without words.

If you’ve ever been greeted at the door by a wagging tail, comforted by a purr, or had a bad day made better by a nuzzle, you know exactly what I mean.

So here's a cheers to the companions in life, who will give you their hearts if you give them yours!
