Disney would feel about today’s cutting-edge virtual production techniques? According to Joan Radner, a Virtual Production Editor, Disney would have been a huge fan because he deeply understood the concept of parallax—how it makes 2D footage feel three-dimensional and immersive.

Back in the golden age of animation, Disney revolutionized storytelling with the multiplane camera, used in classics like Pinocchio, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book. This camera had up to seven layers of glass, each painted with different parts of the scene, and required a team of technicians to operate.

It created stunning depth and realism, bringing Disney’s worlds to life.Fast forward to today, and virtual production takes this idea to new heights. Using fully 3D environments displayed on 2D screens with advanced camera tracking, modern filmmakers create the same illusion of depth—but with even more sophistication.

And what’s more fitting than seeing this technology shine in The Mandalorian, a show produced by Disney itself?It’s incredible to think that the principles Disney pioneered over half a century ago are still at the heart of today’s most advanced filmmaking techniques.
