The prescription (script)

Patients have an interesting relationship with this document. Primarily, the prescription is a “letter” that the doctor (prescriber) sends to the pharmacist. It’s written in a language that the pharmacist understands, NOT a language the patient understands.

The pharmacist then issues medicine according to the instructions on the prescription. The medicines have directions/ instructions that the patient will understand. The pharmacist is the bridge.

For reasons unknown to most, the patient ignores and places zero value to the instructions the pharmacist gives and wants to
- read the box (don’t cover the English side)
- keep the prescription, a paper they can’t make sense of.

Patient: can I have my script back
Me: No‼️ 🤣🤣

It’s not your damn script, it’s mine.

Umntu kaGqirha

So many times I’ve had someone admitted at a hospital call to ask me to bring them medicine.
In other instances, it’s a sibling/ parent/ spouse/ other who comes looking for meds for someone who is admitted at a hospital.

This is wrong. You are now under the care of the hospital, you should NOT be self-medicating.
Diseases are “graded”. When you’re so sick that you need admission it means that YOUR particular condition is “higher grade”. In simpler terms, it’s above the level at which you’re supposed to figure it out on your own.

It means that you are now at a level where qualified people are supposed to figure out what is wrong and make decisions regarding treatment.

Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t something called chronic medication. There are only chronic diseases/ conditions.
The medicine you’re taking to treat your chronic condition can change. The actual 💊 , the dosage or the how you take it.

Previous use IS NOT an indication. ❌❌

INDICATION
- in pharmacy, an indication is the specific approved medical condition, disease, symptom, or use for which a drug is authorized to treat, prevent, cure, or diagnose, meaning it's the "why" a medicine is used.

The “story” is important for when I take your history but there’s no such a thing that you must take a medicine simply because you’ve taken it before.

We need to focus on what’s wrong right now and make a decision based on the now. Yes, this also applies to “chronic medicine”.

I think the headline doesn’t tell the full story.

There’s been a general decline since 2004.
We moved from nearly 1.5 million births in ‘04 to just under 1 million births in 2023.

The largest drop is between the year 2006 and ‘07 at 146 000 births.

I am usually dumbfounded here.

The response has nothing to do with what I just said. The number of tablets or that you usually get them without a prescription at other pharmacies doesn’t have anything to do with what I just said.

No?

Having the disease condition doesn’t make you an expert. Learning about the disease condition does.
Failed marriages don’t make you an expert, you know the problem not the solution.
