Good morning Pharmily

Have you ever heard of the term hypochondria?

A hypochondriac is someone with illness anxiety disorder. This person is convinced that s/he is ill even when there aren’t any “real” symptoms present. They constantly worry about diseases & being sick to the extent that this negatively affects their daily life.
**********************************************
When I got to medical/pharmacy school, we were warned about a similar pheonomenon called Medical Student Syndrome.

One of the causes of MSS is confirmation bias.
Medical students are trained to recognize symptoms and make diagnoses. Without sufficient clinical experience, they may apply this incomplete knowledge to themselves, a form of misinterpretation that fuels health anxiety.

Ulwazi oluncinci luyingozi ‼️

I think this happens even outside of medical school. When people read and watch enough content then they start having this anxiety and inappropriately apply the little information they have about diseases.

You can often tell those who like to think vs those who just used to cram in school. When it comes to health, cramming doesn’t work.

Your neighbour, colleague, or other person telling you their experience with a certain medicine invariably has no bearing on how you will experience that medicine. It’s his/her experience, it absolutely nothing to do with you.

It’s that product review stuff they do on TikTok.
“Here, use this bottle because it helped me”
That’s just nonsense. The person doesn’t even know what’s wrong with you.

Sometimes I’ll be helping a patient and the one behind them yells out “take it, it’s really good”

Tyhini 😳😟

Good day Pharmily

Please be kind, it is difficult to answer the price of a prescription item if you don’t have a script.

Some people are prescribed 10 tabs, some 20…and, and, and.

What if I gave you the price per tablet?
I can, but what is that going to help?
The question is NOT so much the price of the prednisone but it is WHAT WOULD IT COST ME TO GET SOMETHING TO MAKE ME BETTER?

A doctor has to examine you and prescribe the adequate dosage for YOU.

Example:
One person may need to take 1 Amoxyl 500mg capsule 3 times a day while the next has to take 2 capsules 3 times a day. It varies per patient.

The question is wrong.
Neither of the 2 is registered for weight loss.

Using these for off-label use such as weight loss is a decision you take with your doctor. You are using the medicine outside of what it is intended (read registered) for.

Pharmacists are NOT product review consultants. There almost is never a situation where you can compare one molecule to the next. Even in the event where you can, there’s another issue.

1. Ethics prevent you from saying 1 product is superior to the other.

2. Patients aren’t the same. One patient responds better to the cheap cream (or other product) while another responds to the expensive cream.

You often don’t know what you don’t know. It’s science, you know by observation. We will know how YOU (the individual) respond to any particular treatment after you take it, not before.

The work of the healhcare professional is to assess and make an informed decision on what s/he thinks will work for you. The outcome is never guaranteed.

Young lady comes into the pharmacy for an injectable contraceptive. It seems her budget is tight so she has a list of questions prior to going inside the clinic.

You need a clinic book to show that you have been regularly getting your injections.
- she doesn’t have a book or anything to show her history -

In this case you’re treated like a “new” client.
You should ideally be on your period and/or the nurse will do a pregnancy test before administering the injection.

Her: I have already done a test at home.
Me: why did you do a test when you’re already on a contraceptive?

Her: I haven’t gone for my injection in 2 months.
Me: ok, then in that case we need to do the test.

Her: WHY… …when I have done it at home?

You’re at the bank but find out that you forgot your ID card 🪪
Does the bank 🏦 staff still proceed to help you anyway? What if you get someone at home to send you a picture of your ID, does that help?

26/09/2025

If you’re boarding a (local) flight but don’t have your ID 🪪 with you. Do the airline staff accept a picture on your phone? If not, why not?

26/09/2025

If a traffic officer 👮 asks for your driving license, but you don’t have it with you, does he accept a picture of it on your phone? 🤔

This one is to the ladies

Why does your period always know you’re “going on holiday”? 👀

There was a time when the most sick person is attended to first. That changed, it’s a matter of who booked first.

I like that the government is slowly taking action on this. I mean, just about 2 years ago SEDA, a government agency, had issued funding to a lay person to open a shop and sell medicines. The ignorance was disturbing.

Today, here we are, with a government that understands that ONLY qualified and registered persons can sell medicines.

Why do people buy medicine that
1. is not labelled
2. is not stored properly
3. other

It’s because they don’t know any better.
Incorrect storag can render medicines ineffective. You might drink a pill 💊 but it won’t work. Think of an Eno®️ sachet when stored in humid conditions. The water damages it and it forms a hard paste that doesn’t dissolve in water.

How do I become a pharmacist assistant?

You must get 4 things right.
1. You must register with a training institution.
There are several different institutions. e.g. 👇🏽
SBuys: (27) 18 788 2075
Health Science Academy: +27 87 821 1109

2. Find a pharmacy that is registered for training. The pharmacy must appear on the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) register.

3. Find a pharmacist in that pharmacy (the same one at number 2) that is registered as a tutor with SAPC.

4. Register yourself as a learner.
You must register with SAPC that I (insert name here) am registered as a learner with instution (insert name here) under the tutor (name of tutor) at facility (name of pharmacy).

Very important.
The learner, tutor and premises are tied by a bond throughout the learning cycle (12 months).
