I have not watched The Polygamist but I heard that Jonas eventually dies because of contracting HIV.

That’s stigmatising HIV 🤨🧐🤷🏽‍♂️
We should be way past the days of thinking of HIV as a death sentence.

Also, we should be past having a “look” for the HIV +ve person. You can’t tell someone has HIV by just looking at them. There a hundreds of thousands of HIV +ve people who don’t “look” ill. Just like you can’t look at someone and tell that the person has asthma, epilepsy or other.

Anyway, I see that other health departments took the message differently and are using the story to promote PREVENTION.

Have you ever heard of the word stigma when it comes to health conditions like HIV, diabetes, mental health, etc?

STIGMA refers to the negative attitudes, stereotypes, and discrimination directed at individuals or groups simply because they have a specific health condition. It often leads to people being blamed, shamed, or socially isolated, making it harder for them to seek medical care or maintain their well-being.

Example
In general, men fear testing for diabetes because of the stigma attached to it. If you’re diagnosed with diabetes then it means “you can’t get it up”.

In other words, the patient is shamed.

Can you think of other examples?

There’s a South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) is there to protect the public from unethical pharmacy personnel. They are there to make sure we comply with the Pharmacy Act.

They look at academic institutions that teach pharmacy or pharmacist assist courses. You can give them a call when you want to lay a complaint against a certain pharmacy or pharmacy staff.

SAHPRA is there to ensure compliance with the MRSCA and according to this act retail pharmacies are NOT allowed to incentivise patients with loyalty program points for buying medicines.

Healthcare professionals work on facts and global population level evidence whereas patients work on individual feedback as evidence.

Science wants objectivity while patients want trust, and they trust people they know regardless of the fact that those people aren’t subject matter experts.

ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE is information based on personal stories, individual experiences, or isolated observations rather than systematic research.

In church, there’s something called a testimonial. This is an example of an ANECDOTE. It’s just that one person’s experience. In the world of science this story is irrelevant. The stories of millions of people matter more than the story of one.

How can we bring these 2 people, with different views, onto the same table?

Cognitive dissonance is the psychological DISCOMFORT you feel when your actions, beliefs, or values contradict one another.

The pharmacist tells you that the one product is the same as the next but your mind will not allow you to accept that.

You are experiencing cognitive dissonance.

You can go from pharmacy to pharmacy and town to town looking for a medication that doesn’t even work.

You can pay top dollar for a prescription for a medication that has absolutely fokol to do with your disease condition.

ALWAYS, always get the diagnosis first.
The name and price of the medicine comes after. It’s secondary.

I used to want so much to tell people how things ought to work.

That medicines need to be stored in this and that way or that Spaza shops aren’t allowed to store medicines.

I soon realised that it wasn’t ignorance that was making people buy Adco-dols from a Spaza shop. They know the risks.

We are talking about the same people who will toyi-toyi that the meat 🥩 sold at the Spaza is expired but will steal the very same meat during the protest. 🙆🏽‍♂️

The difficult question to answer is why?
Why are people willing to buy medicine from an unqualified person? Why are people willing to risk eating that rotten meat?
Why do expiry dates, storage conditions, not speak to the poor?

I don’t know. 🤷🏽‍♂️
But I know it’s a harder question to answer and that once you answer that then only you can keep the “drugs” and expired foods out of the kasi.
