People will ask friends/ colleagues/ siblings/ other for medical advise then accept it as the gospel. They will watch a random online video and believe it.

However, if a doctor/ pharmacist/ other expert shares information that goes against what the friend said, they won’t accept it.

Both the patient and the healthcare professional don’t know what is happening at that exact moment. The problem is that the patient BELIEVES their friend, BUT has to TRUST the healthcare professional. These aren’t the same thing.

You’ll find the healthcare professional trying to supplement what they said with facts then wonder why this doesn’t work.
“Why can’t I win this patient over?”
- it’s because you assume facts can change what people believe in, they won’t, they don’t.

We will win when we have educated the public. Once people know the dangers of buying meds from just nje any place or anyone then the demand will take a nose dive.

The public is ignorant and that’s our fault.
Criminals will be criminals. We will catch one today but another one will open shop tomorrow. It’s so unfortunate.

This was identified a little too late but I’ll share anyway. It’s too late because these products have been on the shelves for almost 2 years 🙆🏽‍♂️🫤 and will be expiring next month.

Sahpra is recalling 4 batches of the product Enalapril 10mg manufactured by Arya Pharmaceuticals.

These batches were manufactured between Sep & Oct in 2024. The company data (COA on ingredients) shows that all was in order at the time. However, post-marketing surveillance shows that results did not meet the required specifications (OOS).

The affected batches are:
🔴 GQQ24053 — expires August 2026
🔴 GQQ24064 — expires September 2026
🔴 GQQ24066 — expires September 2026
🔴 GQQ24067 — expires September 2026

You are wasting money on REHIDRAT®️ sachets because you mix them incorrectly.

The packet is written that it should be mixed into 250ml of water yet you mix it in 1.5L, 500ml, and so on and so forth. It specifies that it must be mixed in water but you mix it with Powerade®️/ Energade®️/ juice/ other.

You do this because you don’t know any better. There’s no pharmacist to advise you when you purchase these. REHIDRAT is a registered product [S0] and manufactured by a pharmaceutical company.

The mixture MUST be a hypotonic solution. The osmolarity/ tonicity is important because the osmotic gradient means the mixture will move from low tonicity (hypotonic) to high tonicity(hypertonic).

When you use 500ml, 100ml, 1L or any other volume that is NOT the 250ml stated on the packaging then you won’t achieve the target tonicity and therefore will not achieve the desired result. You are going to p**s 💦 all the money you spend on the purchase.

If patients experience a placebo effect, what do doctors experience?

The observer expectancy effect or experimenter bias (not the same thing) is when a person doing the experiment subconsciously records data that matches what they expect to see/ hear.

A person wearing a Pepsi®️ T-shirt, comes to you holding a camera and microphone then asks you which tastes better Pepsi®️or Coke®️…you know if you say Pepsi®️ you’ll get a free drink and T-shirt so you obviously say Pepsi®️ 🤣🤣

Someone selling PlanLife (see what I did there? 😬) products, makes you join a gym with a 100 other people who use the products. Everyday, everyone in the gym talks about how the products are beneficial. When the seller asks for your feedback you will just agree with the group 🤐

In medical research, we have something called a double-blinded-study. The patients don’t know which group is taking the “fake” medicine. More importantly, the researchers also don’t know which group is which. That way, the researchers record everything accurately and without bias.

It’s not enough to do a “study”
The study must be “bias proof”

I want to introduce the word API
It means, Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient

A syrup, tablet, capsule, injection, etc is made up using several ingredients but not all of them are the “medicine”.

e.g. when we talk about Panado®️, we know that the API is Paracetamol. But there are other ingredients like water, sugar, polymers (methycellulose), alcohol, magnesium stearate, preservatives, etc that help to make the tablet/ syrup. We call these other INACTIVE ingredients, excipients.

While the therapeutic effect of medicines comes from the API, side effects and/or allergies can come from the excipients.

This is why it is important for the manufacturer to disclose ALL the ingredients in the medicine.

The Placebo Effect

| The year is 1957 and a new cancer medicine called Krebiozen has just hit the market.

Mr. Wright (not his real name) is dying from lymphosarcoma. A cancer of the lymph nodes.
Tumours had invaded his neck, groin, chest and abdomen, and his doctors had exhausted all available treatments. There were news of a new anticancer drug called Krebiozen and he was convinced it would cure him.

Mr. Wright was bedridden when he received his first injection but 3 days later he was jolly & joking with the nurses. His tumors had shrunk by half, and after 10 more days of treatment he was discharged from the hospital.

After 2 months, newspapers 🗞️ started reporting that Krebiozen doesn’t work. He got sick and was hospitalised again. The doctors reassured him by telling him lies. They told him that there was now an even better version. They then continued to inject him with a placebo.
He improved even more than he had the last time and walked out of the hospital symptom-free. He remained healthy until two months later, when, after reading reports that exposed Krebiozen as worthless, he died within days.

NB!!! other patients in the hospital who had received Krebiozen showed no improvement.

Did you know that you can take a “fake medicine” and it will make you get better even though it doesn’t have ingredients to make you better?

You read that correctly.
e.g Panado®️ (a brand name) works because it has paracetamol (the ingredient). However, I can give you a tablet, tell you it’s Panado®️ and it will work even though it doesn’t have any paracetamol in it.

The “fake medicine” is called a placebo
The process of how this happens is called a placebo effect.

This happens with pain medicines, antibiotics, cancer treatment, ARVs, you name it. Patients visibly get better and their blood tests show improvement by simply believing that the medicine is supposed to work.

During research, to prove that a medicine works, it is measured against a placebo. The research involves having 2 groups of people. One group takes the placebo and the other group takes the “real” treatment.
e.g if it was an ARV, the CD4 count will increase in both groups but the group taking the “real medicine” will show a much larger improvement compared to the placebo group.

What does this have to do with you?

Always make sure you are taking a registered medicine that has been through the research. You don’t need a social media influencer to tell you what works, you need the research.
