Celebrating Women’s Day with SAMRO

On this significant day, we honour the strength and achievements of women across South Africa. SAMRO’s commitment to women’s empowerment is highlighted in the new ongoing campaign, ‘The Future Is Female’. With 42% female representation on our board, 100% representation on the executive committee, and 66% female staff composition, we are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve women’s participation in the music industry, we are pleased to announce our final workshop in collaboration with the Basadi In Music Awards. This initiative, born from the recommendations of our 2022 research on ‘Women’s Rights and Representation,’ aimed to address the underrepresentation of women in the industry, where women made up only 18% of active SAMRO members.

Let’s also take a moment to reflect on the historic courage demonstrated on August 9, 1956, when approximately 20,000 women of all races united in Pretoria to protest against oppressive apartheid legislation. Their bravery and solidarity serve as a powerful reminder of our collective strength and determination.

Join us in celebrating this day and supporting the future of women in music. Together, we can continue to drive positive change and build a more inclusive industry for everyone.
