โ€œWait. Wait until tomorrow. Tomorrow youโ€™ll see.โ€

That was the warning whispered to immigrants in Zwelitsha all throughout Sunday before the formal protest march.

Monday arrived. A group of 200 protesters made their way from Lesedi Square to the police station and presented a memorandum to the officials present. The primary demand โ€“ punctuated by a South African flag leading the procession โ€“ was the immigrants. They must go.

Once the formal protest was over, a second group at the informal settlement started to systematically chase foreigners from their houses and loot houses. This carried on throughout the night, we heard.

An investigation into allegations of corruption and financial misconduct in the Swellendam municipalityโ€™s traffic department has been completed, speaker Du Toit Loubser has confirmed.

This comes nearly a year after initial reports on alleged procedural irregularities at a roadblock following numerous complaints from members of the public.
