Swine fever confirmed in Napier – is CAM ready for the next outbreak?

An African swine fever outbreak among pig herds in the Nuwerus informal settlement in Napier has been confirmed by the state veterinarian. This follows pig deaths among the herds over the past two weeks.

The positive results were communicated on Tuesday by the state vet, who on Friday issued a notice on CAM for a strict shutdown of the affected area.

Napier’s residence association has been sounding the alarm about pigs dying for some time already but action has been slow.

At the time of going to press, the municipality had yet to secure the site and deploy monitors to prevent pigs from leaving affected areas.

Redakteur 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗼 𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘅 vertel die storie van Jan Liebenberg, die man by wie alles begin het in 1928:

“Soos dit hoort met ’n behoorlike koerantstorie, het Liebenberg se verhaal as’t ware by ons deur aangekom: In die loop van 2024, sien ek een middag twee bejaarde mense voor ons kantoor in Kerkstraat, ons Letterpress aan’t bekyk.

"Toe ek uitstap om te gaan kennis maak, stel hulle hulself voor as Jan Liebenberg en Martie de Jager – kleinkinders van mnr. Jan Liebenberg, Bredasdorp se eerste drukker.”

Ons het ’n blaps begaan in verlede week se 𝘚𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘶𝘶𝘴...
Die 𝘀𝗹𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗺 vir ons Nampo Kaap-blokraai was verkeerd.

Die kompetisie sluit eintlik eers komende 𝗠𝗮𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴 (𝟭 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱). Daar is dus nog oor die naweek kans om bietjie kop te krap.

In an era where digital reigns supreme, you wouldn’t expect a printed tome of more than 600 pages about indigenous garden plants to be a bestseller, now would you?

But that’s just happened.

Suiderstrand-based horticulturist, garden designer and natural historian, Geoff Nichols, co-authored 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳'𝘴 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦, along with Elsa Pooley and Andrew Hankey. The book was released earlier this year, and the first printrun is already sold out.

“Yes, we were out of books in record time,” Struik Nature publisher Pippa Parker told 𝘚𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘶𝘶𝘴. “We printed 4 000 copies, and they were gone in three months.”

Contrary to some reports in the national media, there is no large-scale culling of pigs underway in Bredasdorp and there are not thousands of encamped pigs.

𝘚𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘶𝘶𝘴 visited the site of the African swine fever outbreak to bring you the real story.

A team of animal welfare workers from various groups are in the camp daily to provide relief to the pigs. The collaboration between all parties has been praiseworthy, according to Animal Anti-Cruelty League Bredasdorp.

Die Cape Agulhas Municipality (KAM) werk steeds verbete om ’n uitbraak wat vermoedelik Afrika-varkpes is, hok te slaan.

Teen druktyd was by die 150 varke op die dorp reeds dood en nog varke vrek daagliks.

KAM werk nóú saam met die Animal Anti-Cruelty League Bredasdorp wat die kamp daagliks monitor. Die AACL het ook reeds in verskeie gevalle genadedood toegepas, met die toestemming van die betrokke varke se eienaars.

BEPLANDE KRAGONDERBREKING – OPDATEERING (17:20)
Ons is pas deur Eskom in kennis gestel dat die kragonderbreking weens onvoorsiende omstandighede vir nog ongeveer twee uur sal duur.
Neem asseblief kennis dat hierdie situasie buite die munisipaliteit se beheer is. Ons bly in kontak met Eskom vir verdere terugvoer.
Ons besef die ongerief wat dit veroorsaak en waardeer u geduld en begrip in hierdie verband.

“Most of the people who knew the stories are not here anymore," says Dorelle Thompson – a descendant of David Thompson who came from Aberdeen, Scotland and shipwrecked at Struisbaai in 1846. He is presumed to be buried at the old Hotagterklip graveyard.

"Of all David Thompson’s great-grandchildren, my father is the only one left.”

Like the Thompsons, many other local families – including the Stanleys, Van der Rats, Hammers and Joemats – have ties to Hotagterklip’s historical graveyard. In recent weeks, the Agulhas Heritage Society has made great strides in its effort to get formal protection for the site.
