Wessel Rabbets is aangestel as Cape Agulhas Municipality (KAM) se nuwe munisipale bestuurder.

Wes-Kaapse minister van plaaslike regering, Anton Bredell, het sy aanstelling verlede week bekragtig en Rabbets is sedert 1 Desember in die tuig. Hy het vroeรซr vanjaar Bredasdorp toe getrek om waar te neem as KAM se direkteur van korporatiewe dienste.

Rabbets was voorheen o.m. die munisipale bestuurder op Oudtshoorn en by die Weskus Distriksmunisipaliteit. Hy het ook vir โ€™n jaar waargeneem as munisipale bestuurder van die Overberg Distriksmunisipaliteit, as โ€™n PricewaterhouseCoopers-konsultant.

Following the veldfire that swept from Bredasdorp to Napier, residents may start noticing unusual behaviour from our natural neighbours. For many fynbos birds and animals, the fire didnโ€™t just destroy their food sources โ€“ it also took away their shelter.

Ondanks fel kritiek van die gemeenskap, is die omstrede seefront-ontwikkeling by Spookdraai terug in die lug.

Die planne om ses huise tussen Mariene-rylaan en die strand te bou bevat nou talle wysigings wat die negatiewe uitwerking van die beoogde projek wil versag, maar word nogtans gelooi deur Suidpunt-inwoners.

Die gewysigde basiese assesseringsverslag (BAR) is vroeรซr vandeesmaand bekendgemaak en is nou oop is vir openbare kommentaar tot 12 Desember.

The Overberg Renosterveld Trust (ORT) has been named the organisational winner of the 2025 WWF South Africa Living Planet Award โ€“ one of the highest honours in South African conservation.

The ORTโ€™s founder Odette Curtis-Scott received the award last Friday, sharing the stage with actor and playwright John Kani, who received the individual award (see photo).

She said: โ€œThis award is a deeply humbling recognition of the collective effort that goes into saving our precious renosterveld. It belongs not just to our small team, but to our trustees, the landowners, funders and conservation partners who share our belief that these last wild places are worth fighting for.โ€

It was a nail-biting week for residents in the Cape Agulhas municipal area as the runaway fire, started last Friday, swept through the Heuningberg and Soetmuisberg ranges.

It took a mammoth effort by an army of fire fighters โ€“ official ones and volunteers โ€“ to safeguard both Bredasdorp and Napier.

By 13 November, 6 700ha had burnt down, goFPA confirmed.

Raadsheer Dirk Jantjies is die eerste ontvanger van ereburgerskap in Kaap Agulhas vir sy jarelange diens aan die gemeenskap.

Jantjies is reeds vir 30 jaar lank raadslid vir Bredasdorp se wyk 2 en is die langsdienende munisipale raadslid in Suid-Afrika.

Die brandseisoen het vroeg begin vanjaar.

Verskeie groot vure het die afgelope week gewoed op plase in Kaap Agulhas en Overstrand. Die Swellendam-gebied het dit reeds die vorige week ontgeld met verskeie vure wat in en om die dorp beveg moes word.

Ook op Swellendam moes โ€™n skoolkoshuis by Bethelskop inderhaas ontruim word verlede Woensdag nadat โ€™n brand in โ€™n nabygeleรซ bos uitgebreek het en deur sterk wind aangestoot is na die gebou.

Some uplifting conservation news: Cape Agulhas has its own species of redfin! ๐ŸŸ

A small freshwater fish species โ€“ nameless and unknown โ€“ has been slowly evolving in rivers in our region. Now, the only redfin living here not only has a name but has been formally described.

These fish, now officially named ๐˜—๐˜ด๐˜ฆ๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ด (Agulhas redfin), only occur in the Heuningnes River system and its tributaries around Bredasdorp, Elim and Agulhas.

Itโ€™s official: The black harrier (๐˜Š๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด) is the BirdLife South Africa bird of the year for 2026!

โ€œThis gives us the opportunity to raise the level of awareness around the enigmatic, endangered black harrier, which is in dire need of conservation attention,โ€ says Odette Curtis-Scott, CEO of the Overberg Renosterveld Trust (pictured here with one of these beauties).

The selection is particularly important for the Overberg, as the intact fynbos and renosterveld remnants of the region form a breeding hotspot for this raptor.
