BREAKING NEWS: South African Actress and Trailblazing Beauty Queen Cynthia Shange Dies at 76
DURBAN, KwaZulu Natal – April 20, 2026
Veteran South African actress and beauty queen Cynthia Philisiwe Shange, best known to millions as MaNkosi Buthelezi (Thandaza's mother) on the long running SABC2 soap opera Muvhango, has passed away at the age of 76.
Shange died earlier today in a hospital in KwaZulu Natal following a short illness, according to reports and statements from those close to the family. Her daughter, Nonhle Thema, is said to have been involved in announcing the news.
Born in KwaZulu Natal, Shange made history in 1972 as the first Black woman to represent South Africa at the Miss World pageant in London. During the apartheid era, when pageantry was largely segregated, she won the Miss Black South Africa title (also referred to as Miss Africa South) and became the first Black woman to claim a Miss South Africa title variant, paving the way for greater representation. Although she did not place among the top finalists at Miss World, her participation was a landmark moment for Black South African women in beauty and public life.
Her acting career spanned decades and included notable roles in early South African cinema and television. She appeared in the 1975 film Udeliwe, widely regarded as one of the country's first Black feature films, and portrayed Mkabi in the acclaimed series Shaka Zulu. For over 18 to 20 years, she captivated Muvhango audiences with her portrayal of the strong willed MaNkosi Buthelezi, earning her a place as a beloved household name in South African entertainment.
Tributes have begun pouring in across social media and from the entertainment industry, with many describing her as a cultural pioneer who broke barriers in both pageantry and acting during challenging times. "Hamba kahle, Mama Cynthia," read one widely shared message, echoing the sentiments of fans mourning the loss of a matriarch both on and off screen.
Details regarding the funeral arrangements and an official family statement are expected in the coming days. Shange is survived by her children, including Nonhle Thema.
South Africa mourns the passing of a true icon whose grace, resilience, and talent left an indelible mark on the nation's cultural landscape.
