Soul City Institute Calls for Arrest in Alleged Statutory R**e Case

The Soul City Institute for Social Justice has called for the immediate arrest of a 32-year-old man from KwaZulu-Natal who allegedly impregnated a 16-year-old girl.

The teenager reportedly gave birth on Christmas Day, sparking public concern and renewed calls for stronger action against the sexual exploitation of minors.

Soul City Institute CEO Phinah Kodisang condemned the incident, emphasizing that safeguarding children is a shared responsibility. She urged law enforcement authorities to act swiftly, warning that failure to do so undermines efforts to protect vulnerable children.

Kodisang reiterated that statutory r**e is a serious criminal offence and called on communities to report cases of abuse, ensuring perpetrators are held accountable and children are protected.

GOVAN MBEKI MUNICIPALITY CLARIFIES MISLEADING INFORMATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Govan Mbeki Municipality has noted with concern a misleading information on the alleged of grave that was not dug for the funeral that was scheduled for 10:00 on Saturday, 20 December 2025 at Joe Slovo Cemetery in Secunda.

Wrong information is paddled on the social media painting municipality badly.

The correct information is:

1. The grave of ……(deceased) was booked on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, for the funeral scheduled to take place on 20 December 2025, 09:00 at Joe Slovo Cemetery.

All necessary documents and protocols were followed and concluded in this regard.

2. Grave number was communicated to the person who was responsible for booking/purchasing the grave.

3. Grave number 114, Block 29 Row 8, was prepared before the funeral procession arrived at the cemetery. The grave was dug and finished at about 8:45-09:00 on 2025. The family member who was at the grave side in the said morning informed the Foreman who was on duty that the funeral would depart from eMbalenhle at 09:00.

Someone made averment that grave that was booked on Wednesday should have been prepared on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

It is not unusual for the municipality to dig graves even on the day of the funeral. Graves in some cemeteries are dug before the funeral proceeding(s) arrive at the cemetery. This is sometimes influenced by the following factors:

(a) Some graves collapse when they are dug a day or so in advance. Graves at Joe Slovo (Secunda) and some sections of Emandulo, New Bethal and Ekuphumuleni (eMbalenhle Extension 14) Cemeteries are prone to such occurrences. Hence, some of them are dug in the morning before the funeral proceedings arrive.
(b) Sometimes, the TLB experiences mechanical problems and is not able to dig in advance. The municipality usually sources the TLB from other depots to dig in the morning or before the funeral arrives at the grave site.
(c) Sometimes graves collapse while the funeral procession is at the gate. In that regard, the TLB is summoned to come and dig while the procession is waiting. Collapse of grave(s) is a matter beyond our control.

The municipality hereby state that there was no wrong doing on its side and would like to inform the public that graves are dug before the funeral(s) arrive at the cemetery or someday(s) before depending on the condition of the soil in the said cemetery.

It is also noted that some families and undertakers arrive at the cemetery a few hours before the funeral arrives at the cemetery. Our time of digging the grave is planned not to coincide with the time that the funeral is scheduled to arrive.

The municipality urges members of the public to be cautious of misinformation and to seek full and verified context before drawing conclusions.

The municipality wishes to inform the public that there is a new Cemetery By-Law that was promulgated on 10 October 2025. The by law is currently in effect. Members of the public, undertakers, and all who use cemeteries are requested to familiarise themselves with the provision of the said by-law: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iCBssMSyytXIXlvRv4dGYbH9fDyGvjdL/view?usp=sharing
