SOUTH AFRICAN CULTURE SHINES AT PRESTIGIOUS UK SUMMIT

UNITED KINGDOM — South African culture has received international recognition following the honouring of a leading Maskandi musician as a Cultural Icon in Maskandi Music at the Nelson Mandela Leadership Awards & Diplomatic Summit 2026, held at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

The recognition celebrates the artist’s contribution to Maskandi music and his role in promoting South Africa’s rich cultural heritage through music.

REGISTRATION FOR THE 2026/2027 INDIGENT SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Govan Mbeki Municipality hereby calls on all qualifying residents who are unable to afford basic municipal services to register for the 2026/2027 Indigent Support Programme.

The Indigent Support Programme is a social welfare initiative aimed at assisting qualifying low-income households, unemployed residents, pensioners, persons living with disabilities and other vulnerable households who meet the criteria set out in the Municipality’s Indigent Policy.

Despite the financial challenges facing the Municipality, Council remains committed to ensuring that no qualifying household is denied access to basic municipal services due to an inability to pay.

Who Qualifies?
To qualify for registration, an applicant must:

Be a South African citizen residing within the Govan Mbeki Municipality area.
Be the owner or occupant of the property where he or she resides.
* Have a total household gross income of not more than R8,000 per month, in accordance with Council’s Indigent Policy.
* Be unemployed, a pensioner, a person living with a disability, or otherwise earning below the prescribed income threshold.

Benefits for Approved Indigent Households
Qualifying and approved beneficiaries may receive the following support:
* A subsidy on municipal property rates.
* 50 kWh of free electricity per month.
* 6 kl of free water per month.
* Free basic sewerage services.
* Free refuse removal services.

Consideration for the write-off of qualifying municipal arrears, subject to the applicable policy and conditions.

Registration Details
Residents may register at their nearest municipal office during the following hours:

Monday – Thursday: 07:30 – 16:30
Friday: 07:30 – 14:00

Documents Required
* Applicants must provide the following documentation:
* Certified copies of the South African identity documents of the applicant and spouse, where applicable.

Proof of income or an affidavit confirming unemployment.

EVANDER HIGH SCHOOL DANCERS SET TO TAKE ON NATIONAL STAGE

EVANDER — Evander High School is celebrating the outstanding achievements of its talented learners who train at Visionary Dance School (VDS) after securing their place on the national stage.

The dancers earned their Mpumalanga colours at the DTMA Provincial Competition, held in Evander from 28 to 30 August 2026. Their impressive performances saw them crowned overall winners in the Senior Hip Hop section.

Following their provincial victory, the talented dancers will now represent Mpumalanga at the DTMA National Dance Competition, which will take place at Carnival City from 17 to 26 September 2026.

The school has expressed immense pride in the learners’ dedication, hard work and commitment to dance, wishing them every success as they prepare to compete against some of the country’s best young dancers.

Evander High School wishes our dancers the very best as they carry the Mpumalanga flag onto the national stage. Go make us proud!

FROM CHALLENGES TO INSPIRATION: LUCKY SKHOSANA TO LAUNCH RISING BEYOND LIMITS

SECUNDA — What started as a personal journey of overcoming obstacles has now become a story that local author and community advocate Lucky Skhosana hopes will inspire people across the community and beyond.

Skhosana will officially launch his new book, Rising Beyond Limits, on 12 September 2026 at 13:00 at Saxony Coffee in Secunda. The event will also mark his birthday, making the occasion a double celebration.

The book reflects on his journey, the challenges he has faced, his faith and his determination to continue pursuing his dreams despite difficult circumstances.

For Skhosana, writing the book was an opportunity to turn personal experiences into a message of hope.

«“I want my story to remind people that your challenges do not have to decide your future. You can still dream, start something new and rise beyond the limits placed in front of you.”»

The launch is expected to bring together supporters, friends, family and members of the community who have followed Skhosana’s journey.

Guests will receive a signed copy of the book, together with a platter and a drink. Tickets are available for R300.

The author says the book is particularly important because it encourages people to believe in themselves and take the first step towards their goals.
