Police in Mpumalanga are investigating two separate incidents of gender-based violence murders that occurred in Masoyi and Vosman, where one victim was stabbed and another shot.

In the first incident, which occurred on 27 October 2025 around 07:30 at Jerusalem Trust in Masoyi, near a tavern, police received information about a woman (22) who had been stabbed by her male friend (26). Upon arrival, police found the victim lying on the front lawn of the suspect’s residence with multiple stab wounds to the neck. She was certified dead on the scene by Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

The suspect’s father informed police that his son had stabbed his girlfriend during a domestic argument. He further indicated that the suspect was hiding in a locked room. Police managed to open the door and apprehend the suspect who had sustained injuries. He was placed under arrest for murder and taken to hospital under police guard. He will appear in court soon.

In the second incident, which took place on 26 October 2025 around 21:00 in Vosman, police responded to a complaint of domestic violence. Upon arrival, officers found a group of people outside the house. The homeowner led police to the back room occupied by a tenant. Inside, officers discovered the body of an African female lying on a bed with a gunshot wound to the chest.

They also found an African male lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head. He was still gasping for air, with a firearm lying beside him. Paramedics were summoned to the scene but certified both the male and the female deceased upon arrival.

POLICE INVESTIGATE AN INQUEST FOLLOWING THE DROWNING OF A BOY AT KWENA DAM, LYDENBURG

Nelspruit: 27 October 2025 –Police in Lydenburg are investigating an inquest case following the tragic drowning of a 10-year-old boy at Kwena Dam on Sunday, 26 October 2025, at about 15:30.

According to information received, upon arrival at the scene, police found that the boy had already been certified dead by paramedics. The boy’s mother, Mrs. Dipolelo Baadjie, informed police that the family had been fishing and relaxing at the dam when the incident occurred. The children were reportedly playing near the water when she heard them screaming for help. The boy’s father managed to rescue one of the children; however, another child, identified as Moeketsi Baadjie (10), unfortunately drowned.

Divers from the SAPS K9 Units in Lydenburg and White River responded and successfully retrieved the body at approximately 17:30.

As the festive season approaches, police continue to urge members of the public to remain vigilant, supervise children closely near bodies of water, and refrain from consuming alcohol while visiting rivers and dams. During this period, several drowning incidents are often reported, many of which could be prevented through caution and awareness.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and commended the diving team for their swift response and dedication. The Commissioner further urged community members to always exercise safety precautions when visiting areas with open water.

THOUSANDS OF IDENTITY DOCUMENTS SIT UNCOLLECTED AT HOME AFFAIRS – REVEALED REPORTS DURING THE GERT SIBANDE SPEAKERS FORUM.

Ermelo, Mpumalanga - 27 October 2025.

The Speaker of Council at Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM), Cllr Busisiwe Sekhonde, has raised concern over the large number of uncollected identity documents (IDs) across the district and called for urgent collective action to ensure that citizens retrieve their IDs from the Department of Home Affairs.
Cllr Sekhonde made this call during the Speakers Forum held at the GSDM Council Chambers in Ermelo, where the Office of the Speaker convened key stakeholders to assess progress on voter education and public participation programmes ahead of the upcoming local government elections.
The meeting brought together Speakers and Managers from local municipalities, Public Participation Officers, municipal researchers, and representatives from the Department of Home Affairs and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to discuss strategies aimed at improving civic participation.
The forum noted with concern that thousands of identity documents remain uncollected from Home Affairs offices across the district, hindering access to services and voter registration efforts. The breakdown of uncollected IDs per municipality includes Bethal and Secunda in the Govan Mbeki Municipality (1 250 and 2 122) respectively, Carolina and Eerstehoek in the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality (427 and 830 respectively), Ermelo in the Msukaligwa Local Municipality (786), Mkhondo in the Mkhondo Local Municipality (1 087), Standerton in the Lekwa Local Municipality (1 214), and Volksrust in the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality (155).
It was therefore resolved that local municipal Speakers, working closely with ward committees and the Department of Home Affairs, will intensify community outreach programmes and increase visibility in towns and villages to raise awareness and assist residents in collecting their IDs.
Cllr Sekhonde emphasised that uncollected identity documents not only affect access to essential services but also undermine voter participation and democratic inclusion.
β€œEvery uncollected ID represents a citizen who could be left behind β€” unable to access services, unable to register to vote, and unable to fully exercise their rights. We are calling on all residents to act now: visit your nearest Home Affairs office and collect your identity document. Your ID is your power.”
Among the attendees was the Speaker of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Cllr Thato Mathunyane, who joined the session to learn from the best practices of the Gert Sibande Speakers Forum, which is recognised for its structured and collaborative approach to strengthening governance and public engagement.
This call forms part of the municipality’s broader efforts to strengthen public participation, promote voter readiness, and support inclusive governance throughout the district. [ENDS]
