Language Matters: The Beauty of isiZulu Sayings That Shape Our Lives

“Ulwazi luyigugu, knowledge is a treasure.”
In Eshowe, words are more than a way to speak they carry wisdom, humor, and identity. The isiZulu language connects generations, reminding us of where we come from and guiding how we treat each other.

From the laughter shared in greetings to the deep meaning behind proverbs, our language paints a vivid picture of who we are as a community. Expressions like “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” (A person is a person through others) remind us of the spirit of ubuntu the belief that our humanity is tied to the kindness and respect we show others.

A community member shared, “When I speak isiZulu, I feel grounded. It’s more than words it’s home.”

As the world changes, it’s our responsibility to keep these sayings alive to teach them, speak them, and celebrate them in everyday life. Because every word carries a story, and every story keeps our culture alive.

| Eshowe, Let’s Live Well Together

In Eshowe, wellness starts right where we are from peaceful walks through Dlinza Forest to early morning workouts at the stadium and fitness groups that bring our community together.

“Good health isn’t just about how strong your body is, it’s about peace of mind, positive energy, and caring for yourself daily,” says a local community member

Healthy living doesn’t always mean big changes, sometimes it’s choosing to walk instead of drive, eating more fruit, or giving yourself time to rest.

Let’s make Eshowe a place where wellness becomes a way of life. Support local health programs, visit clinics for check-ups, and encourage others to stay active and positive. Together, we grow stronger

Lighting Paths Through Learning

Sphephelo Ayanda Mbatha

“Education is not just about teaching subjects it’s about awakening the power within each learner to dream, think, and act.”

Passionate, driven, and deeply committed to shaping young minds, this remarkable educator embodies what it means to teach with purpose. She brings both knowledge and heart into her lessons, inspiring her learners to see education as more than just a classroom experience but as a journey of discovery and growth. She currently teaches Tourism (Grades 10–12) and Life Orientation (Grades 8–9) at Majiya High School , subjects that allow her to connect learning with real-life meaning.

Armed with an impressive academic background from the University of Zululand, she holds a Bachelor of Arts (2021), a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (2022), and a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology (2023). eShowe - My Home

Nobody can confirm how the name “eShowe” came about. Legend has it that it comes from the sound the wind makes when hising through the tall grass of this towm on the hill. Some say the name comes from the zulu word for mushrooms which is “ikhowe”, no one knows. But what others should know is that eshowe is rich with Zulu historical footprint. From Fort Nongqayi, to KwaBulawayo, to the grave of Queen Nandi, the mother of Zulu’s great King Shaka. More than this, everyone should know that, no matter where I am, Eshowe remains my refuge, my go-to place in happiness and sadness, eShowe is my home.
