Everybody Breathes: Free TB Screenings in Eshowe

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading health challenges in South Africa, but early detection can save lives. In Eshowe, free TB screenings are being offered to help the community fight back against the disease.

The campaign, themed “Everybody Breathes,” reminds us that TB can affect anyone, young or old, rich or poor. By getting tested, you protect yourself, your family, and your community. Screenings are quick, simple, and free of charge at local clinics and mobile health units.

A local health worker explained: “TB treatment is free, but it starts with knowing your status. The earlier we find it, the faster we can treat it.”

Why it Matters
• TB spreads through the air and can be prevented with early treatment.
• Free screenings mean cost is not a barrier to health.
• A healthy community is a stronger community.

Eshowe has the power to fight TB together. By making use of the free screenings, every resident can take a step toward better health and a safer future.

Let's unite to together-because Everybody Breathes better when we stand as one.

Tourism: A Key Driver of Eshowe’s Economy

Eshowe is not just a small town in KwaZulu-Natal, it is a gateway to culture, history, and natural beauty. Tourism plays a vital role in boosting the local economy, creating jobs, and supporting small businesses. From the iconic Dlinza Forest Aerial Boardwalk to historical sites like Fort Nongqayi Museum Village, visitors are drawn to the rich heritage and breathtaking scenery of the area.

When tourists visit Eshowe, they spend money on accommodation, local crafts, transport, and food. This income circulates within the community, helping families, traders, and entrepreneurs to thrive. According to local business owners, even small increases in tourism can make a big difference in sustaining livelihoods.

“Each visitor who buys from us is supporting a family in Eshowe.” Says a Craft market vendor

Tourism is more than just travel, it is a bridge between cultures and a foundation for economic growth. By promoting our attractions and encouraging local hospitality, Eshowe can continue to shine as one of Zululand’s hidden gems.

Who can we feature next week?
Next week, we could shine the spotlight on local entrepreneurs who are turning traditional crafts into thriving businesses, showing how creativity and culture strengthen our economy.

Building Bright Futures Through Education

Mr Mawesana
Principal

Enkanini, Eshowe, I-Saron Primary School stands as a pillar of hope and learning. Leading the school today is Mr Mawesana, a dedicated educator who has devoted many years to shaping young minds and uplifting the community through education.

Mr Mawesana began his teaching career in 1996, focusing on subjects that build strong foundations for learners: Mathematics (Grade 7), Technology (Grade 7), and Natural Science/Technology (Grade 6). For 29 years, he worked tirelessly as a teacher before stepping into leadership.

In May 2025, he was appointed as principal, and though he has served just three months, his vision for education and the youth is already clear. He believes that guiding children requires more than lessons from a textbook.

“Education is not only about teaching subjects, it is about empowering children to believe in themselves and prepare for a brighter future,” says Mr Mawesana.

His journey is a reminder that true change in education comes from passion, patience, and a heart for the youth.

The Role of Technology in Rural Business

In today’s world, technology is no longer just for big cities, it is transforming rural economies too. In towns like Eshowe, local businesses are using simple but powerful tools such as mobile money, social media, and online marketing to grow and reach more customers.

Mobile money has made it easier for people to buy and sell without needing a bank. This has created safer and faster transactions for small businesses, especially spaza shops, farmers, and vendors.

Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp are helping local businesses advertise their products to wider audiences. A single post about fresh vegetables, handmade crafts, or salon services can attract customers from nearby communities.

Online marketing is also opening doors for youth entrepreneurs. By learning how to design flyers, run promotions, or sell goods online, many are finding new ways to earn income and grow their brands.

As one local entrepreneur said: “Technology has given us a way to compete with bigger businesses while staying in our community.”

Technology is no longer a luxury it is a necessity for rural business growth.

Pregnancy at School: Challenges and Support for Young Mothers

Teenage pregnancy in schools is a reality that affects many families and learners in South Africa. For young girls, it often means balancing the responsibilities of motherhood with the demands of education. This can lead to challenges such as stigma, dropping out of school, or struggling to catch up with lessons.

Despite these difficulties, support from families, teachers, and the community can make a huge difference. Education is still possible, and many young mothers have gone on to complete their studies and build successful lives.

A mother from Eshowe shared: “When my daughter fell pregnant, I was hurt, but I encouraged her to go back to school. I told her that education will give her and her child a better future.”

By offering understanding and support, schools and communities can help young mothers break the cycle and reach their dreams.

Farming as a Business: Building Income from the Land in Eshowe

For many years, farming in Eshowe has been seen mainly as a way to provide food for the family. But a growing number of local farmers are showing that agriculture can also be run as a profitable business that creates income, supports households, and boosts the local economy.

Unlike subsistence farming, business-oriented farming requires planning, investment, and a focus on markets. Farmers are no longer planting only for survival they are producing with customers in mind. Vegetables like spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, and carrots are always in demand, whether at local markets, schools, or small businesses.

Successful farmers in the area treat their gardens like enterprises. They keep financial records, calculate production costs, set fair prices, and reinvest profits into seeds, fertilizers, or better equipment. By doing this, they move beyond survival and begin to grow sustainable businesses.

One inspiring example is a woman from Eshowe Thandeka who started a small vegetable garden in her yard. What began as a family project has become her main source of income. She now sells fresh produce to households and vendors in the community. “Farming is like any other business,” she says. “If you put in the work, stay consistent, and plan properly, it will pay you back.”

With the right mindset and support, small-scale farmers can transform their gardens into thriving enterprises that feed families, create jobs, and keep money circulating in the local economy.

The Role of Parents in Education

Education is often described as the key to success, but for children to truly thrive, learning must extend beyond the classroom. Teachers play a vital role, but parents are the first and most influential educators in a child’s life. The home environment and family support can make the difference between a learner struggling and one who excels.

How Families Can Support Their Children’s Learning

Support does not always mean money or private tutoring, it starts with small, consistent actions. Parents can:

• Show interest by asking about their child’s school day.
• Provide structure through a quiet study space and a set homework routine.
• Encourage reading by keeping books, newspapers, or even story apps available.
• Communicate with teachers to stay updated on progress.
• Celebrate achievements, big or small, to build confidence.

The Impact of Home Environment on Education

A child who grows up in a supportive, encouraging household is more likely to develop confidence, discipline, and curiosity. Simple habits like family discussions, shared meals, or even storytelling in the evenings build a strong foundation for critical thinking and language skills.

On the other hand, when children lack encouragement or face negativity at home, it can affect concentration, motivation, and self-esteem. This is why parents are key partners in education.

Parent Feature :

A mother of two from Eshowe, believes that education starts at home. “I may not understand every subject my children are learning, but I make sure they know I’m interested,” she says. Every evening, she sits with her children as they do homework, creating a routine that keeps them disciplined.

Education works best when schools and families work hand in hand. Parents may not know all the answers, but their presence, encouragement, and support inspire children to aim higher.

Who can we feature next week to share their insights on supporting learners in our community? Let us know your suggestions.

The Cultural Meaning of Slaughtering a Cow

Slaughtering a cow is not just about food, it is a deeply rooted cultural practice filled with meaning, respect, and unity. Among the Zulu people, for example, a cow symbolizes wealth, honor, and connection to both the living and the ancestors.

Izinkomo zivame ukuhlatshwa ngesikhathi semicimbi ebalulekile efana nemishado, imicimbi yamasiko, imingcwabo, kanye nemicimbi yokukhulekela amadlozi. Lesi senzo siyindlela yokukhombisa ukuhlonipha izivakashi, ukubonga amadlozi, nokubonisa ukubaluleka kosuku. When a family slaughters a cow, it is seen as a gesture of generosity and hospitality, because everyone present shares in the meat.

Before the cow is slaughtered, there are usually rituals performed. Elders may say prayers or speak to the ancestors, asking for blessings and guidance. The slaughtering itself is done with care and respect, often by someone chosen from the family who understands the traditions. The hide, meat, and even certain parts of the cow are used in symbolic ways, nothing is wasted.

Slaughtering a cow is more than just a family event, it brings the whole community together. Neighbors, relatives, and friends gather to help, cook, and share in the meal. It becomes a space of singing, dancing, and passing down traditions to the younger generation.

As one elder explains “Ukuhlatshwa kwenkomo kusho ukubumbana, ukwamukelwa kwezivakashi, kanye nokuqinisa ubudlelwane phakathi kwamalungu omndeni. Ngaphandle kwayo, umcimbi ungase ungabonakali njengobalulekile noma ungase ungabinakho okudingekayo ukuze kuqiniseke isibopho somndeni. Ngakho-ke, inkomo iyisihluthulelo sokuhlanganisa umndeni kanye nokugubha isasasa lesikhathi esinjalo”

Even today, despite modernization, slaughtering a cow remains an important practice. It is not only about keeping culture alive but also about strengthening bonds within the community. It reminds people of their roots, their identity, and the values of respect and togetherness.

eShowe - My Home

Nobody can confirm how the name “eShowe” came about. Legend has it that it comes from the sound the wind makes when hising through the tall grass of this towm on the hill. Some say the name comes from the zulu word for mushrooms which is “ikhowe”, no one knows. But what others should know is that eshowe is rich with Zulu historical footprint. From Fort Nongqayi, to KwaBulawayo, to the grave of Queen Nandi, the mother of Zulu’s great King Shaka. More than this, everyone should know that, no matter where I am, Eshowe remains my refuge, my go-to place in happiness and sadness, eShowe is my home.
