The Buns We Rarely Tasted

Every baker has a story.

Mine began long before I knew what a bakery was.

As children, my siblings and I helped our mother prepare dough the night before she baked fresh dinner buns to sell at the taxi rank. Those buns helped feed our family and even helped send my brothers to college.

Ironically, we hardly ever tasted them.

As soon as they came out of the oven, they were packed and sold while still warm. Only on lucky days would my mother return home with a few unsold buns, and those tasted like the greatest treat in the world.

Our old coal stove turned the whole house into an unpaid sauna! 😂 We sweated through every batch, prayed the dough would rise, and celebrated every successful bake.

Looking back, I realise my mother wasn't just baking bread.

She was baking hope.

That's where my love for baking was born.
