13 September 1989 - the Peace March. Led by the then mayor, Gordon Olivier, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Rev, Frank Chikane, Farid Esack and Allan Boesack, nearly 30 000 people of all denominations and races marched from St. George's Cathedral, the Peoples' Cathedral, in defiance of the state of emergency, the last "illegal march" to demand an end to apartheid.
