NSRI – Wilderness – Sunday, 24 May. Response after unidentified flying object lands in the sea offshore of Wildereness:

Jonathan Britton, NSRI Wilderness station commander, said:

At 10h17, Saturday, 23 May, NSRI Wilderness duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of an unidentified object landing in the sea about a nautical mile offshore of The Steps, Wilderness Beach.

A video of the unidentified object landing in the water was sent to NSRI for examination.

Our duty crew responded to our NSRI Wilderness station 23 rescue base where we launched the NSRI rescue craft Ann Stratford while our NSRI rescue vehicle responded to Dolphin Point to get visuals.

ARCC (Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre) were alerted and they distributed the video in efforts to determine what the flying object may be, which included SAWS (SA Weather Services) examining if it may be a weather balloon, and investigations by aeronautical authorities and ATC (Air Traffic Control) to determine if it may possibly be a large drone.

On the NSRI rescue craft arriving on the scene, following a brief search, the object was located and confirmed to be large helium party balloons.

The party balloons were recovered for disposal.

The eyewitnesses that raised the alarm are commended for their vigilance.

The operation was completed at 11h29.

NSRI – Plettenberg Bay – Saturday, 16 May. A lady and her 4 dogs, walking on Robberg Beach engulfed by waves, assisted to safety:

John Bosman, NSRI Plettenberg Bay deputy station commander, said:

At 12h02, Friday, 15 May, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew were activated when an NSRI crewman, walking home along the top of Robberg Beach, while checking on the conditions of the boardwalks, following the recent storms, he happened upon a group of ladies who expressed concerns about a lady and her dogs walking on Robberg Beach, below where they were, and appearing to be unable to exit the beach that was increasingly being affected by the incoming high tide effectively trapping her on the beach where stairways, that normally provide safe transit to and from the beach, having been washed away in the recent storms.

The NSRI crewman investigated finding a lady appearing to be trying to exit the beach up steep sand dunes and vegetation that borders most of the beach line but her efforts appeared to be unsuccessful and the situation was fast becoming dire raising further concerns and with urgency the NSRI crewman activated NSRI Plettenberg Bay.

NSRI crew responded to our NSRI Plettenberg Bay station 14 rescue base to collect rescue equipment, dispatching our NSRI rescue vehicle, while additional crew responded directly to the scene.

On arrival on the scene NSRI rescue crew were able to reach the lady and her dogs, on the beach, but high tide was fast approaching threatening to cut off any escape from the beach.

The lady and her dogs were guided to an area on the beach where there is normally a wooden stairway (that stairway collapsed in the recent storms) where a pathway up a steep incline was navigated to get her and her 4 dogs safely off the beach.

Once safely up above the beach and out of danger no further assistance was required.

NSRI commend the group of ladies who raised the alarm.

NSRI to flood-affected communities: Turn Around. Don't Drown.

Widespread flooding across the Garden Route, West Coast, Cape Winelands and parts of the Eastern Cape has left many roads, bridges and river crossings dangerous and unpredictable.

The NSRI is urging motorists, residents and pedestrians in affected areas to stay away from flooded roads, river crossings and fast-moving water.

Even river crossings used every day can become deadly during flooding.
Floodwater is deceptive. Water that appears shallow and slow-moving can carry enormous force.
Just 15 cm of moving water, about the length of your hand, can knock an adult off their feet and wash them away.
Just 30 cm of moving water, roughly halfway up a car tyre, is enough to lift a vehicle and sweep it away.
"Every year, people underestimate floodwater because it does not look dangerous," said Andrew Ingram, NSRI Communications Manager.

"But once a vehicle loses traction or someone loses their footing, the situation becomes critical very quickly. No trip is worth risking a life."

The NSRI message is simple: TURN AROUND. DON'T DROWN.

"If a road, bridge or river crossing is flooded, please do not attempt to cross. Turn around. Find another route. Wait for the water level to drop, and warn others not to take unnecessary risks."

Safety guidance during the current flooding
Never drive, walk or wade through floodwater, no matter how shallow it looks.
Keep children well away from rivers, stormwater drains and low-water crossings.
Do not stop on bridges or near riverbanks to watch rising water.
Follow official road closure notices and listen to local authorities.
Report any person in distress immediately to the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre on 087 094 9774.
