I remember when I was a child, my mom and Andrea took me to antique stores that had records. I would browse through lists of different singers and their studio albums. I became curious about Donna Summer's various genre changes, including her synth-pop phase in the 1980s, and I discovered an album called "Cats Without Claws" (1984).
When we were driving back home, I went to my room, set up the portable record player, turned it on, and increased the volume slightly. I heard one of the best Donna songs, "It's Not The Way." As I listened, I thought it should have been a hit single. Another one of my favorites is "Cats Without Claws," which features that spooky guitar "meow" sound in the pop synth style of 1984.
I like the song "Supernatural Love" sung by Donna Summer, but I don't think it's her best; her voice sounds a bit high on the microphone in the studio, and the song didn't chart as a hit single. Many fans were not very happy with the airplay of "Cats Without Claws" in 1984. This was partly because Donna chose to move away from disco music in the 1980s while at Casablanca Records and signed with Geffen Records for a new direction.
Many fans were not in favor of Donna's decision to change her music genre based on her Christian beliefs, moving away from disco at Casablanca Records, which some considered a poor choice. As for me, I don’t practice a religion or have faith in God.
I heard Donna's song "Oh, Billy Please" on my Walkman CD, and I think it's just okay. I wasn't a fan of how her singing voice came off as really high and loud with the guitar music. I understand that Donna wanted to release "Oh, Billy Please" as a single, but David Geffen said no; he likely didn’t allow her to release it as a single because he didn’t like the song or felt her vocals were too high.
One of my all-time favorite Donna songs is "Eyes." I listened to it on my Walkman for years, and it’s an incredible track! I truly wish "Eyes" had become a hit single from the album "Cats Without Claws" (1984). The song has that haunting and spooky guitar sound in the studio!
This might be a ballad song, “Maybe It’s Over,” sung by Donna Summer, and it's a great track as well! I also heard one of her last songs, “Forgive Me,” which discusses religion and God. However, it's not one of my favorites since I’m not someone who prays or follows a religion. I didn’t particularly enjoy listening to “Forgive Me” sung by Donna with the piano.
I have a different perspective on the album “Cats Without Claws” and its ratings. There are some songs I enjoy while others don’t resonate with me.
