ermany has indeed been advancing alternative energy storage technologies, including innovations that challenge the dominance of lithium-ion batteries.

One such development is the salt-and-air battery—a type of metal-air battery, often referred to as sodium-air (Na–air) batteries or sodium-ion batteries.

These batteries are designed to store renewable energy (like solar or wind) without the environmental and ethical concerns tied to lithium mining.

Instead of using lithium, these systems utilize abundant sodium (often derived from salt) and oxygen from the air, making them significantly cheaper and more sustainable.

Key German companies and research groups, such as Fraunhofer Institute, have been at the forefront of this innovation. A notable example is Fraunhofer IGB’s saltwater battery, which uses brine and air as core elements for energy storage.

Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, which degrade over time and raise concerns over supply chain issues, these new systems have a potential lifespan of decades, require low maintenance, and are non-toxic and recyclable.

Such batteries are part of Germany’s broader push for energy independence and climate-neutral infrastructure, especially in light of geopolitical tensions and the shift away from fossil fuels.

These technologies could play a critical role in grid-scale energy storage, particularly in combination with intermittent sources like solar and wind.

While still in the pilot or early commercialization stages, salt-and-air (or sodium-ion) batteries are rapidly gaining attention as a low-cost, long-term, and lithium-free alternative that aligns with global sustainability goals.
