Tensions flared in Thembalethu on Sunday afternoon as residents took to the streets following a community meeting where concerns over illegal immigration were raised.
Public Order Police were forced to intervene after a crowd moved towards foreign-owned spaza shops, deploying a stun gr***de to disperse the gathering. No injuries were reported, and by Monday morning the situation had returned to calm.
The developments came just hours before President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on government's new migration crisis plan, acknowledging growing concerns around illegal immigration, border security, jobs and public services.
