Identifying and naming every plant and animal in nature is a challenging endeavour. Zoologist, Fortunate Phaka has taken on this task by leading the first in-depth study of how frogs and reptiles are named and classified across nine South African languages.

The paper, titled “Naming South African frogs and reptiles in nine Indigenous languages” features in Volume 74, Issue 1 of African Journal of Herpetology and documents 136 frog species and 407 reptile species, all of which have been scientifically recognized.

In Ghana the White-necked Rockfowl was thought extinct for over 40 years until its rediscovery in 2003, which led to efforts to locate additional populations. A study is featured in Volume 96, issue 1, Ostrich: African Journal of Ornithology titled "Trends and population size of White-necked Rockfowl Picathartes gymnocephalus within the Nyamibe Bepo Forest Reserve in Ghana".

The sustainability of tuna stocks in the southwestern Indian Oceans remains a critical concern, with the stock status of tunas such as kawakawa Euthynnus affinis being poorly understood due to limited assessments although data available suggests potential declines.

African Journal of Marine Science, Volume 47, issue 1 2025 includes a special suite of papers titled ‘Small tunas, big significance – the rising importance of skipjack tuna and kawakawa in the southwestern Indian Ocean’.
