Winter Solstice - Saturday, 21 June 2025
The Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, takes place today on Saturday 21 June.
Therefore today, 21 June, is officially the shortest day of the year and last night, 20 June, was the longest night of the year, 2025, in the Southern Hemisphere.
And now our daylight hours slowly increase as we start the slow progression towards Spring BUT we still have a LOT OF WINTER LEFT 🥶
Because of this position of the sun, it causes the least amount of daytime-light, with the sun in its lowest position in the sky, with less sunlight and less warmth/heat. It is also the official start of our astronomical or official Winter.
In the Northern Hemisphere, exactly the opposite happens. So the longest day and it was also the shortest night, measured by the amount of daylight-time and the official start of the Northern Hemisphere's astronomical summer.
