STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER OF KWAZULU-NATAL HON. THAMSANQA NTULI FOLLOWING THE SITTING OF THE PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL AT MOSES MABHIDA BUILDING ON 07 MAY 2025

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Executive Council has just finished its ordinary sitting, the first since the Easter weekend, and we are pleased to update the nation on the following issues:
1. COUNCIL AGAINST CRIME LEADS COLLABORATIVE CRIME PREVENTION DRIVE
Yesterday(06 May), I chaired the third meeting of the Provincial Council Against Crime(CAC), the structure that coordinates collaborative crime prevention in our province.
The meeting followed on the heels of the recent release by SAPS, of the October-December 2024 crime statistics.
In the report, crimes against the person indicated an increase of 6.0% (+1860 cases). The following categories of Contact Crimes also went up:
- Total sexual offences increased by 195 cases (7.4%);
- Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm increased by 1220 cases (14.4%);
- Common Assault increased by 1185 cases (15.6%).
At the same time, the following categories of Contact Crimes indicated decreases:
Murder decreased by 156 cases (-9.5%); Attempted Murder by 4 cases (-0.2%); Common Robbery by 23 cases (-1.1%); and Robbery Aggravating decreased by 557 cases (-8.2%).
We have the usual suspects in the eight (8) stations with the highest amount of cases in volume for the Contact Crimes which also appear in the National Top 30 stations. These are Inanda(1052 cases), Umlazi(954), Plessislaer(949), Durban Central(845), Empangeni (828), KwaDukuza(813), Chatsworth(753), and Verulam(752).
A total of 1493 cases of Murder were registered for this period with 63 cases of multiple murders i.e., 63 cases with 150 deaths. Although this crime
