THE CENTENARY STORY OF THE LITTLE CHURCH - SOUTH AFRICA'S HERITAGE AND TOURISM TREASURE

By Matefu Mokoena

Whether you are planning a heritage tour, exploring local attractions or simply interested in South Africa's stories of beauty, the Little Church offers a journey through time and offers a moment of silence in worship as you pass by.

Celebrating 100 years, this historic landmark has stood as a symbol of community, faith, and architectural beauty.

Step into a century of history with the Little Church, a true heritage and tourism gem.

Officially known as Llandaff Oratory, the Little Church is situated in the tiny town of Van Reenen, about 35 km south of Harrismith and just a stone's throw away from the N3 national road.

It was built in 1925 by then retired magistrate, Maynard Reginald Nelson Matthews, in honour and memory of his son, Llandaff Matthews, who died in a mining rockfall at Burnside Colliery near Glencoe while trying to save trapped miners.

Llandaff Oratory is an 8-seat church. The eight seats represent the eight miners, whom the young Matthews died trying to rescue.

As this South Africa's key heritage site and tourism attraction marks its centenary, there are plans to celebrate this milestone with a special church service in November.

"WE ARE THE QUEENS", SO SAY FREE STATE'S WOMEN IN BLUE AS THEY CELEBRATED WITH A GALA DINNER

The Free State Province marked Women’s Month with a prestigious gala dinner hosted at Woodlands Country Lodge in Parys, Fezile Dabi District. The celebration was a powerful display of the province’s unwavering commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women across all sectors, particularly within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The event commenced with an energetic and moving performance by the SAPS Free State Band, setting an uplifting tone for the evening. Adding gravitas to the occasion was the attendance of the Deputy Minister of Police, Dr. Polly Boshielo, whose presence underscored the significance of the celebration.

Under the empowering theme “Women, We Are Queens,” the evening celebrated the strength, resilience, and leadership of women. Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General BB Motswenyane, welcomed attendees and highlighted the event's purpose—to honour women who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, courage, and service.

In a heartfelt address, Lt General L Nkhuoa extended appreciation to the women of SAPS, saying, “We see you, we value you, and tonight we celebrate you.” Her words resonated deeply, reaffirming the SAPS’s commitment to recognising and supporting its female members.

A symbolic highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the “Men for Change” backdrop, a public declaration of unity in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Dr. Boshielo and her delegation took to the stage to unveil the banner, joined by Brigadier Makhele, who led a solemn prayer for peace and healing for GBV survivors.

The evening’s pinnacle was the presentation of awards to outstanding women within SAPS, honouring their dedication and excellence in service. The award recipients included:

* Constable M. Dishobane

* Constable N. Radebe

* Constable M. Delport

* Sergeant B.P. Mothibi

* Sergeant K. Moroe

* Sergeant B. Nthoba

* Captain Walaza

* Sergeant M. Tjaoane

* Lieutenant Colonel M. Motsoari

* Colonel S.S. Tyu

* Colonel Ndzotjana

In her keynote address, Deputy Minister of Police Dr. Polly Boshielo congratulated the awardees and praised all women in SAPS who continue to rise beyond the call of duty. She spoke passionately about the importance of earning respect through hard work and integrity, calling on senior women in leadership to uplift others and cultivate a culture of mentorship and empowerment.

As a gesture of cultural appreciation, Lieutenant General BB Motswenyane presented Dr. Boshielo and her delegation with traditional Basotho blankets (Seana Marena) and the iconic Sotho hat (Modianyewe).

Major General Makhele delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the efforts of all who contributed to the event’s success.

The celebration was not only a tribute to individual achievement but also a collective affirmation of the SAPS and the province’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment. It was a night of pride, purpose, and powerful reminders of the strength of women.

A SPECIAL PARADE FOR FREE STATE'S WOMEN IN BLUE

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State honoured dedicated women in uniform today, during a special Women-Only Medal Parade held at the Tumahole Stadium in the Fazile Dabi District.

During the ceremony Brigadier BH Teleki, the Provincial Head of Finance in the Free State, received a 30-year medal, 67 members received 20-year medals, and 46 members received 10-year medals in recognition of their long and loyal service to the organisation and the people of South Africa.

The Deputy Minister of Police, Dr Polly Boshielo, delivered the keynote address and expressed her pride in the achievements of the recipients.

“This is an occasion I could not miss. Recognition, especially for long service, is an achievement worth celebrating. The handing over of each medal was very special to me because it represents years of sacrifice and dedication. These medals are a symbol of hope that we still have loyal and committed members within the service,” said Dr Boshielo.

The parade formed part of Women's Month celebrations, honouring the sacrifices, dedication, and leadership of women serving in the South African Police Service.
