I wish every pawrent will choose to be present.
I’d never leave our baby alone with Rex but…
Rex was our first baby.
Soft ears, wagging tail, full of loyalty.
He filled our hearts before Henry filled our hearts
and for a while, we wondered how they’d share the space.
When we brought Henry home,
Rex crept close, cautious but curious.
He sniffed tiny socks, licked his feet,
and seemed to understand, this one’s ours.
Now, six months on, they’re inseparable in spirit.
Henry laughs loudest when Rex’s tail sweeps across the floor,
and Rex, in turn, lay beside him on the playmat,
his head resting just close enough to feel included.
They’re gentle with each other,
two souls learning side by side what love looks like.
But here’s the truth I stand by,
even as my heart swells watching them together:
I’d never leave them alone in a room.
Not because I doubt Rex.
Not because I fear him.
But because love isn’t blind, it’s careful.
A wag can knock over a toy,
a paw can land in the wrong place,
a second can turn from sweet to startled.
And in those tiny, unpredictable seconds,
we owe both of them our presence.
So we stay close.
Always just within reach.
Not as a guard, but as a guide,
the bridge between fur and fingers,
bark and babble.
Because one day, when Henry’s old enough to throw the ball himself,
and Rex’s hair has turned grey,
I’ll look back and know,
we did it right.
Together.
