✨ THE MARINE REVEALED — A LEGACY REIMAGINED ✨
Some places are more than hotels.
They become part of the story of a town.
For more than 120 years, The Marine has stood proudly overlooking Walker Bay, welcoming generations of visitors who have come to experience the beauty of Hermanus. It has witnessed changing times, celebrated countless milestones, and earned its place as one of South Africa's most treasured seaside hotels.
Its story began in 1902, when Walter McFarlane and his brother-in-law, Valentine Beyers, established a modest hotel with just 21 rooms. Guests travelled from Cape Town by ox wagon, often taking three days to reach this spectacular coastline, drawn by the fresh sea air, breathtaking scenery and the charm of a growing coastal village.
As Hermanus flourished, so did The Marine. The hotel expanded in 1918, becoming the social heart of the town during the 1920s and 1930s, hosting elegant dances, celebrations and distinguished guests, including Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, and railway pioneer Sir William Hoy.
Over the decades, this grand old lady experienced periods of prosperity, decline and remarkable renewal. David Rawdon restored the hotel in the 1980s, before the late Liz McGrath lovingly transformed it into the world-class five-star destination that so many have come to cherish.
Today, another beautiful chapter has been written.
As a media guest, I had the privilege of experiencing The Marine following its magnificent refurbishment—and what an extraordinary transformation it is.
The renovation perfectly honours the hotel's remarkable heritage while embracing a fresh sense of contemporary elegance. Inspired by the natural beauty of Walker Bay and the Overberg's unique fynbos landscape, every detail has been thoughtfully considered. Rich green panelling, bespoke hand-painted murals, natural textures, elegant lighting and beautifully curated furnishings create interiors that feel sophisticated, welcoming and timeless.
From the reception area to the elegant cocktail bar, the beautifully restored passages and the spectacular Pavilion Restaurant, every space reflects understated luxury while remaining true to the character that has made The Marine so beloved for generations.
But a beautiful hotel deserves exceptional cuisine.
Following our tour, we were invited to experience the culinary artistry of Executive Chef Oelof Vorster and his talented brigade at The Pavilion Restaurant.
From the very first course, it became clear that this is far more than simply dining. Every plate is beautifully presented, every ingredient thoughtfully chosen and every flavour perfectly balanced. Inspired by the ocean, the abundance of the Overberg and the finest seasonal produce, Chef Oelof has created a menu that is refined, contemporary and unmistakably South African.
Each course reflected genuine craftsmanship, creativity and attention to detail, while the warm hospitality made the experience even more memorable.
