It's one of the rarest sightings in the bush but guide Johan Nel at Senalala Safari Lodge managed to capture this caracal on camera! Small, well-camouflaged and highly elusive, many guides will go an entire career without spotting one of these beautiful and unique felines - yet as Johan tells us in the latest issue of the Klaserie Chronicle, this particular female actually hung around for several minutes, eventually walking out right in front of the vehicle!

Reflecting on the experience, Johan said "It was absolutely amazing. Definitely one of the best moments of my career so far!"

Get the whole story, and Johan's full reaction, by buying a copy of the Klaserie Chronicle at local Hoedspruit merchants today for just R69. All proceeds support Eco Children and their work uplifting local community schools ✨

The latest edition of the Klaserie Chronicle features a fascinating article by Warden Colin Rowles on the 2022 predator census. The results show a dramatic increase in the lion population - higher than in the last 11 years - owing greatly to the phenomenal growth of the Klaserie River pride based in the centre of the reserve!

Anna Mussi was nominated as a Conservation Hero for this issue of the Klaserie Chronicle. When we spoke to her about her work, it was clear she was living her dream and was totally dedicated and committed to helping to save Africa’s rhino.

In June Anna was tragically killed in a road accident in Hoedspruit. Her shocking and
untimely death has left everyone devastated – she was such an integral part of the local wildlife community. Despite only being 32, she had made such a huge impact on so many people’s lives locally, nationally and internationally. Her courageous spirit, sense of justice and her unlimited ability to give of herself will live on in her legacy.

It is an honour to publish this article in memory of Anna and to share some of her last words and thoughts. May she rest in peace and we send our sincere condolences to her family, colleagues and tribe of friends.

In memory of Anna, and to continue her legacy, Rhino Revolution has created a memorial fund: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/RhinoRevolutionUKLegacyforAnna

During the late winter of 2021 and with the onset of spring and the first electric storms of the season, the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve experienced several lightning fires after large trees were struck directly by lightning bolts, setting the surrounding veld alight.

Again this year, fires broke out in neighbouring reserves, and members and staff jumped in to fight a potentially devastating wildfire.

Experiences like these remind us of the importance of proper fire training to better equip the staff of the reserve, both from HQ and private camps, to fight veld fires safely and effectively.

In our latest issue, warden Colin Rowles writes about vital fire training in the Klaserie.

"Do you know what the most popular camera is for a safari in these modern times?

It’s not a mirrorless, DSLR, or a bridge camera. The usual and synonymous brands like Olympus, Canon and Nikon aren’t anywhere to be seen. Instead, it’s the likes of Apple, Samsung, Huawei and many more leading the culminative new march on how casual photography is represented in the 21st century – and this includes on safari."

Photographer Samuel Cox Photography from RAW Photographic wrote another article for our publication, this time highlighting how mobile phone photography is taking over on game drives! Is it all for social media?

We are very proud of Amy's determination to stand for what she believes in and to do what she can to help give a young woman an opportunity!

Please show your support by pledging a donation to Amy's cause. Read more and hear from Amy in her own words in her recent article published in the Chronicle.

Publishing news about conservation & community in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve since 2005

Klaserie Chronicle (KC) is a quarterly publication by Eco Children, an initiative of the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve (KPNR), and has been in print since 2005!

Focusing on reserve news, conservation and research, wildlife sightings, farm and family history, and community projects and developments, the KC is showcases all that the Klaserie encompasses. Each issue is distributed to farm owners, Eco Children donors, partners, and other stakeholders, and copies are available at Klaserie Headquarters and Eco Children offices in Hoedspruit.

Our digital platform was established as a means to connect with our online community and to give our stories a greater reach. On this page, you’ll discover the multifaceted dimensions of the KPNR and be able to stay up to date on the activities and new initiatives of Eco Children and the reserve’s conservation initiatives. We’ll report on the most notable wildlife sightings in the reserve and showcase the Klaserie’s selection of beautiful safari lodges, plus, keep an eye out for special features on some inspiring and incredible people in the field.

Our articles are contributed by local experts in wildlife, botany, and ornithology, plus the Klaserie’s distinguished management and staff, researchers, and reserve staff. This is a way to connect with like-minded people, share the triumphs and challenges of living in the Kruger’s great wilderness, and to create support for our local community. Thank you for joining us!
