There's something about Pilgrim's Rest that stops you in your tracks. Tucked into a valley in the Mpumalanga escarpment, this old gold rush town looks much the same as it did over a century ago — and that's exactly the point.

We sometimes take a detour through here on our Panorama Route tours, and it never disappoints. The buildings, the history, the setting — it's one of those places that feels genuinely untouched.

The town has had a tough time lately and needs visitors. If you're exploring the escarpment, take the turn-off. You won't regret it.
