📢 Statement to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC)

As the creative sector, we are deeply concerned about the lack of transparency regarding funds allocated to the 17 clusters representing our industries.

🔎 Key Concerns:

How do we know the money is being used to benefit the sector and not just for administrative stipends?

Are clusters only accountable to DSAC, or should they also report directly to the sectors they represent?

Why must we wait until the first tranche report, which often reflects administration costs only and not real sectoral impact?

To date, there are no physical offices, no admin jobs created, and no physical meetings held between clusters and the sectors they claim to represent.

These clusters appear to exist only on paper.

We ask: Has DSAC witnessed any meeting of the 17 clusters with their respective sectors? If not, how can they claim to represent us?

📢 We demand accountability, transparency, and meaningful engagement to ensure that funding truly serves artists, creatives, and cultural workers—not just stipends for administrators.

Statements of Concern about SATIC

1.

It is troubling that emails sent to SATIC by artists and creatives receive no response or even acknowledgment. This silence creates the impression that SATIC is not genuinely committed to listening to the very sector it claims to represent.

2.

Artists have written multiple times to SATIC, yet their concerns remain ignored. This pattern communicates disregard for the creative community and undermines the trust that should exist between artists and the institution.

3.

Instead of serving as a bridge between artists and opportunities, SATIC seems to have perfected the culture of ignoring artists’ voices. Whoever is advising them to take this approach is misleading them and harming the credibility of the organization.

4.

Basic professional courtesy demands that correspondence be acknowledged, even if a full response takes time. Failure to do so reflects badly on SATIC’s leadership and raises questions about accountability.

5.

We call upon SATIC to prioritize transparent communication, respect for artists, and consistent acknowledgment of concerns. Anything less defeats the purpose of its existence and erodes confidence in its role within the creative sector.

SATIC - South African Theatre Industry Chamber Department of Sport, Arts and Culture whoever that advising SATIC to ignore our emails is misleading them.

[ PART 9 ] ...

Eugene Mthethwa raises concerns during the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture, calling for accountability and urgent transformation in the sector.

Hon. Mthethwa highlights systemic issues affecting artists, misuse of public funds, and the ongoing neglect of cultural infrastructure.

“We cannot continue to speak about development while our artists are starving and our heritage is crumbling.”

He demands that the Department stop sidelining practitioners and start putting artists and communities at the centre of policy and funding decisions.
