Theme: Anything That Is Not of Faith Is Sin
Main Text: Romans 14:23 (AMP) – “…For whatever is not from faith is sin—whatever is done with doubt is sinful.
1. Memory Verse
Hebrews 11:6 – “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
2. Lesson Objectives
By the end of this study, participants should be able to:
1. Define what it means that anything not of faith is sin.
2. Explain the dangers of doubt, fear, and unbelief.
3. Identify biblical examples of living by faith and by unbelief.
4. Apply faith principles in daily decisions and actions.
5. Commit to a lifestyle of faith in God.
3. Introduction
Sin is not only outward actions like stealing, lying, or immorality—it is also the inward condition of doubt and mistrust of God. Romans 14:23 teaches that if our actions are not rooted in faith, they are sinful. This means even good works can be sinful if they are not motivated by faith.
4. Teaching Outline
A. Understanding Faith
Faith is the foundation of Christian living (Romans 1:17).
Faith is trusting God beyond feelings and circumstances.
Without faith, we cannot please God (Hebrews 11:6).
B. What Is Sin According to Romans 14:23?
Doubt and fear are sin.
Actions not rooted in faith are sin.
Even good works done outside of faith lose their value before God.
C. Biblical Examples
1. Israel’s Unbelief – They could not enter the Promised Land (Hebrews 3:19).
2. Peter Walking on Water – Doubt made him sink (Matthew 14:28–31).
3. Abraham’s Faith – He did not stagger at God’s promise (Romans 4:20–21).
D. Dangers of Living Outside Faith
Brings condemnation (Romans 14:23).
Blocks blessings (James 1:6–7).
Leads to fear, anxiety, and worry.
Keeps us in spiritual wilderness.
E. How to Live by Faith Daily
1. Study and meditate on the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
2. Pray and depend on God (Mark 11:24).
3. Act in obedience, not fear (2 Timothy 1:7).
4. Trust God’s promises even when it seems impossible.
5. Surround yourself with people of faith.
5. Discussion Questions
1. What does Paul mean by saying “whatever is not of faith is sin”?
2. Can a believer commit sin while doing something good? Give examples.
3. Why do you think God classifies doubt and fear as sin?
4. What practical steps can we take to ensure our daily decisions are rooted in faith?
5. Share a personal testimony where walking in faith brought victory.
6. Practical Assignment
This week, write down 3 areas of your life where you have been acting in fear or doubt.
Replace each with a faith confession from Scripture.
Practice speaking and acting on those confessions daily.
7. Conclusion
Faith is not just for receiving miracles but for living a godly life. Anything not rooted in faith displeases God. To live in doubt, fear, or worry is sin. Therefore, let us walk by faith, live by faith, and finish our Christian race in faith.
8. Closing Prayer
Lord, help us to live by faith in every area of our lives. Deliver us from doubt, unbelief, and fear. Strengthen us daily, that our actions, prayers, and service may be pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
