Bulwer, KwaZulu-Natal – 22 October 2025
Police in Bulwer, KwaZulu-Natal, have arrested two foreign nationals aged 36 and 40 after they were found transporting 31 livestock suspected to be stolen. The arrests form part of the South African Police Service’s ongoing efforts to curb stock theft and rural crime in the province.
According to police reports, members of the SAPS stopped the suspects’ vehicle during a routine operation en route to Pietermaritzburg. Upon inspection, officers discovered 20 goats and 11 sheep inside the vehicle. When questioned about the animals, the suspects allegedly presented fraudulent documents claiming ownership of the livestock.
Further investigation revealed inconsistencies in the paperwork, prompting officers to detain the pair for possession of suspected stolen property. The livestock has since been seized as evidence while efforts are underway to trace the rightful owners.
Police spokespersons confirmed that the suspects will appear before the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 October 2025, facing charges related to stock theft and the use of forged documents.
The South African Police Service has reiterated its commitment to fighting crime in rural areas, particularly incidents of livestock theft, which continue to affect farmers and communities across the province.
“We will continue to conduct stop-and-search operations and roadblocks to intercept criminals who exploit rural communities. Stock theft not only impacts livelihoods but also threatens food security and local economies,” said a SAPS official.
The arrests have been widely welcomed by residents and farming associations in the area, who have praised the police for their visible presence and swift action.
Authorities have urged livestock owners to ensure proper branding and record-keeping of their animals to assist in tracing and recovery in cases of theft.
