ALLEGED FRAUDSTERS APPEAR IN COURT FOR R2.3 MILLION FRAUD

Five accused persons appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on 15 January 2026, facing charges of fraud amounting to more than R2.3 million.

The accused, Unkhonto Maropola (36), Kgopotso Maopola (30), Johannes Sathekge (37), Kgaugelo Malebana (32), and Kgopotso Mohlake (35), were arrested on 13 and 14 January 2026 after voluntarily handing themselves over to the Polokwane-based Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit.

The allegations stem from a 2023 water project tender awarded by the Polokwane Local Municipality to a company in which Maropola was responsible for facilitating the tender process. After being removed from his duties, Maropola allegedly hired an engineer and created fraudulent documents bearing the company’s logo.

It is further alleged that Maropola unlawfully appointed himself as a director and opened a new bank account in the company’s name. The fraudulent documents were then submitted to the municipality, resulting in a payment of over R2.3 million being deposited into the account.

The affected company subsequently reported the matter to the Hawks. Investigations revealed that the funds were shared among the engineer and directors of various companies who did not render any services.

Through a thorough investigation, the Hawks successfully traced the flow of the funds.

All five accused were granted bail of R20 000 each, and the matter was postponed to 27 March 2026 for further proceedings.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Major General Gopz Govender, commended the investigating officer for the diligent work conducted.

MAN SEEN CHASING CROCODILE IN THE NIGHT

By Mashamba Media
Mbyana ya Mahungu

Shock and fear gripped Makuleke Village in Malamulele, Limpopo after a man was spotted chasing a CROCODILE in the dead of night.

Residents are baffled about where the dangerous reptile came from. Many believe heavy rains and flooding may have washed it out of nearby rivers, while others insist it’s a mystery how a crocodile ended up on the road at night.

Community members say they are trying to make sense of the incident, but nothing adds up. “We add 1+1 expecting 2, but instead we get 15,” one resident said — a clear sign of confusion and unanswered questions.

Is the village safe? Where did the crocodile really come from, who took the picture and who is that man? For now, we don't have answers.

A 33-year-old foreign national has been dramatically arrested after police uncovered military-grade explosives at a house in Malvern East, Ekurhuleni, on Friday, 09 January 2026.

The arrest followed tip-offs received by the Anti-Gang Unit, alerting officers to a man allegedly stockpiling dangerous explosives. Acting swiftly, heavily armed police pounced on the house, leaving the suspect with no chance to escape.

Inside the property, officers made the shocking discovery of military explosives, raising serious concerns about public safety and possible criminal links.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is expected to appear before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, where he will face a serious charge of possession of military explosives.

Police have not ruled out further arrests as investigations continue.

POLICE RECOVER TWO VEHICLES LINKED TO CASH-IN-TRANSIT ROBBERY

By Mashamba Media
Mbyana ya Mahungu

Police have recovered two vehicles believed to have been used as getaway cars following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery in Roodepoort, Gauteng.

The vehicles — a white BMW and a Nissan Hardbody bakkie — were discovered at a house in Meadowlands, Soweto, shortly after the robbery. Police confirmed that the BMW was hijacked in Gauteng, while the Nissan Hardbody was hijacked in the North West province.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Saturday, 10 January 2026, along Elias Motsoaledi Road in Roodepoort. A cash-in-transit armoured vehicle, which was being escorted by a security officer driving behind it, was rammed by a white Mercedes-Benz travelling in the opposite direction. The impact caused the cash van to overturn.

Additional suspects then joined the scene, where explosives were used to breach the armoured vehicle. A shootout ensued between the suspects and the escorting security officer. The suspects reportedly disarmed three security officers who were inside the cash van and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The Mercedes-Benz used to ram the cash van was set alight before the suspects fled the scene in two BMW vehicles and a Nissan Hardbody bakkie.

A swift response by various units of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Traffic Police, and private security companies led to the recovery of one BMW and the Nissan Hardbody inside the yard of a house in Meadowlands, Soweto. A man and a woman found inside the house were taken in for questioning.

The search for the remaining suspects and the stolen cash is ongoing.
