Under 23 national team broken and haunted after AFCON hopes shattered by Congo

The South African Under-23national team’s dream of playing at the 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this year came to an end after a 0-0 draw with Congo-Brazzaville in an away second leg qualifier extinguished all hope on Monday.

Notoane made four changes to the starting lineup that played in the 1-1 draw against the Congolese in the first leg at Dobsonville a few days ago, but this was not enough to ease past a determined home side that was also motivated by vociferous home crowd.

The two teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0 after a few missed opportunities from both sides that forced the goalkeepers to work overtime.

It was a much improved second halfperformance from the South Africans, but they could not break Congo and find the crucial goal they desperately sought. Congo managed to keep their nerve and hold onto the 1-1 aggregate and advanced on the away goal rule.

The defeat means South Africa will not be participating in the U23 AFCON tournament to be hosted by Morocco in June 2023 and the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.

Over 4 500 wheelchairs earmarked for Gauteng patients

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is currently contacting patients who have registered and are on the waiting list to be issued a wheelchair to come collect their devices. The Department has issued 4 586 wheelchairs in the 2022/2023 financial year.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko in a response to a parliamentary question at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko said that there was a backlog of 2 270 people who made requests for wheelchairs. Of this, 1 499 patients have already been issued with the mobility devices across hospitals, clinics and community healthcare centres as at 20 February 2023 with a balance of 771 currently being cleared.
“The bulk of our health facilities have received the outstanding wheelchairs that have been ordered and are busy calling approved registered patients to come collect,” explained the MEC.

Out of the remaining 771 people who have not yet received their wheelchairs 498 devices are in stock and awaiting collection. Only 273 wheelchairs are still to be delivered at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) which has 253 people on the waiting list, 6 at Rahima Moosa, 12 at Thelle Mogoerane and 2 at Jubilee.

The CHBAH currently does not have sufficient storage for wheelchairs as it was damaged after flooding. The hospital is in the process of procuring a storage unit to ensure bulk storage of wheelchairs, and will in the meantime frequently place orders in small amounts to mitigate the storage issue.

Assistive devices are issued only after assessments have been made by qualified personnel at facility level. The patient condition/diagnosis determines the type of design of wheelchair for prescription. People who are in need of wheelchairs are advised to visit their nearest clinic for assessment so that those that qualify can be included on the list.

Women's World cup trophy lands in Mzansi

The Women’s World Cup trophy has completed its two day tour in South-Africa as part of a 32-country tour that aims to “inspire global excitement” ahead of the tournament, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand between July 20 and August 20.

South-African Football Association (SAFA) received the trophy at the Shapa Soweto Centre on Wednesday, March 22 with the presence of players from the women’s national team, including the nations’s coach Desiree Ellis.

In addition, the event saw the presence of SAFA president Danny Jordaan, soccer legends, as well as representatives from FIFA.

FIFA indicated that the tour, which is the “biggest-ever” Women’s World Cup Trophy Tour, seeks to “inspire people of all ages by ‘Going Beyond’ to celebrate the rocketing popularity of the women’s game.”

The tour began on February 25 and will make stops in Asia, Africa, South America, North America, and Europe until May 22. It will then stop in nine cities in Australia and New Zealand which will host the World Cup games.

Banyana have been drawn in group G, alongside South American powerhouse Argentina and European giants Italy and Sweden.

Desiree Ellis guided Banyana Banyana to their maiden continental triumph, with a 2-1 win over Morocco in the final, but the task gets even tougher for Ellis and her ladies as they now chase the biggest crown of them all at the 2023 FIFA Women's World.

Sasko aim to upgrade 1000 playgrounds with "play better" campaign

The SASKO Siyasizana community initiative has launched the ‘Play Better’ campaign which aims to build, restore and upgrade 1000 playgrounds throughout Mzansi in 2023. Through the power of positive play, the campaign is targeting early childhood development (ECD) and foundation phase age group children with a strong anti-bullying message by promoting active and positive play.

SASKO has been at the centre of communities since 1930, and the SASKO Siyasizana initiative has always focused on building a solid foundation for our nation’s children. Siyasizana, which means ‘we are helping each other’ previously provided pre-primary and primary school children with reading books and educational material. This latest project aims to build on this legacy by promoting social skills development.

The Play Better campaign forms part of SASKO’s “people who care make things better” brand repositioning which launched last year. The initiative is on a mission to rollout 100 playgrounds in phase 1 through a consumer call to action of nominating a school of their choice that they believe deserves a playground upgrade. The winning schools will be provided playground upgrades to the value of R10 000 each. The second phase of the campaign will then roll out a remainder of playground upgrades across day cares and primary schools through a recycling mechanic. Schools will be invited to collect a stipulated number of SASKO bread bags to qualify to be in the running for a playground upgrade.
