The lush polo field at Rubicon Polo Club came alive as Abuja’s polo and lifestyle community gathered to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day in grand style. The Independence Day Exhibition delivered an unforgettable mix of competitive sport, cultural celebration and national pride.

The day opened with a flag-raising ceremony and the national anthem that set the tone for a vibrant showcase of unity and heritage. Guests were treated to two exhilarating polo exhibition matches that featured top players from Rubicon’s elite teams in fast-paced, high-goal action that thrilled the crowd.

Notable guests included diplomats, business leaders, polo patrons and members of Abuja’s social scene — all gathering under the theme of “Unity Through Sport.”

The dust has settled, marking the spectacular end of the recent NPA Kano International Polo Tournament on the iconic grounds of the Kano Polo Club. The Most Anticipated Tournament of the Year - as the tournament is billed had four trophies competed for - Emir of Kano Cup, Dangote Cup, Dangote Cup and MRS Cup.

Days of thrilling chukkas, incredible horsemanship and fierce competition were witnessed as top teams from across the nation and beyond battled for glory. The energy, tradition and the sportsmanship on display was truly unforgettable.

The final of the Emir of Kano Cup was an epic battle between Malcomines and Danmarna. The triumph marked excellence in sport and a celebration of teamwork and discipline. , and the relentless pursuit of greatness.

🚨 151 years of polo played in Africa 🚨

King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa was established owing to the 19th century warfare between the Cape Colony and the AmaRharhabe Xhosa people. The town began its life on the banks of the Buffalo River as a mission station in 1834.

Colonel Harry Smith of the Rifle Brigade and veteran of Waterloo arrived in charge of military operations. He duly pitched tents near the garden of the old missionary station.

Subsequently, the governor of the Cape Colony Sir Benjamin D’Urban proclaimed King William’s Town the capital of the Province of Queen Adelaide on 24 May 1835. The town was named after King William IV (r. 1830-1837) the then reigning British monarchy.

The Cape Mounted Rifles, a South African mounted unit was already stationed in King William’s Town in the month of October 1874. That unit received an infantry regimen of the British Army, the Gordon Highlanders that had been sent from India to garrison the border towns of the Eastern Cape. Their teams set off what was to become the first recorded polo match in Africa.

It was later named after the British King William IV. It was not too long thereafter that the first polo match ever played in Africa took place in October 1874. Now renamed Qonce, it birthed polo in Africa in October 1874.
