The declining quality of Botswanaโs softball league has become increasingly apparent, as shown by the results of the 2024/25 National Softball League .
Sports analyst Thato Matenge, who closely monitored Week 3 of the South League, talking to Yarona Fm expressed concern about the widening skill gap among teams and the overall competitive level.
In some of the most striking results, Police 9 Menโs team forfeited their game against BDF 9 after conceding 13 runs within just three inningsโa scenario rarely seen for a team with Police 9โs reputation. UB Giants Men further demonstrated this disparity by overwhelming the Bears with a 17-1 victory, underscoring the significant imbalance between top and lower-tier teams.
Matenge attributes this declines to a lack of financial incentives within the National Softball League. He believes that without better funding and support, players and teams struggle to maintain high standards, impacting the overall quality of the league.
The lack of investment limits resources for training, coaching, and facilities, which, according to Matenge, could ultimately jeopardize the league's ability to foster competitive, high-quality matches and draw fan engagement.
