A former Limpopo police sergeant, Rachel Shokane Kutumela (43), is accused of planning nine murdÂŁrs to claim over R10 million in insurance payouts. She was arrested in 2024 with her sister and daughter. All three face 30 charges, including murdÂŁr, fraud, and money laundering.
Police say Kutumela targeted vulnerable people, insured them, then arranged their deaths between 2019 and 2024. While in prison at Matatshe Correctional Facility, she allegedly tried to get relatives to take out more insurance policies and also attempted to interfere with state witnesses, possibly with help from her lawyer.
Her bail has been delayed several times, and the state strongly opposes her release. The case has been compared to that of convicted kiIIer Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu. Kutumela is said to have shared insurance payouts with her co-accused, using companies like Absa, Standard Bank, and Old Mutual.
Families of the victims have called her “dangerous” and demanded justice. The bail hearing continues on 24 July, and more arrests may follow.
