A tragic accident occurred on the R21 South, just before the Engen filling station, where two pedestrians were fatally struck by a truck.

According to initial reports, the victims, believed to be between the ages of 20 and 30, attempted to cross the freeway unsafely when the incident happened. Both pedestrians were declared dead at the scene, while the truck driver was not injured.

Authorities have temporarily closed all five lanes on the R21 South to allow emergency services to attend to the scene. Motorists are advised to approach with caution and expect delays. As an alternative route, drivers can use the R563 Mooderfontein Road off-ramp.

A 39-year-old woman, Ntsebeng Marygold Moji, has been found guilty of fraud and money laundering after she illegally claimed more than R178,000 from the COVID-19 relief fund.

Moji, who owned Aqua Land and Swimming Services, pretended that 16 people worked for her company so she could access the money. She was arrested in February 2025 following an investigation by the Hawks. The Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court ordered her to either pay back the money or serve four years in jail.

Her business was also fined but the penalty will only apply if further crimes are committed. Authorities say they are continuing to act against COVID-19 relief fund scams across the country.

A former Limpopo police sergeant, Rachel Shokane Kutumela (43), is accused of planning nine murdÂŁrs to claim over R10 million in insurance payouts. She was arrested in 2024 with her sister and daughter. All three face 30 charges, including murdÂŁr, fraud, and money laundering.

Police say Kutumela targeted vulnerable people, insured them, then arranged their deaths between 2019 and 2024. While in prison at Matatshe Correctional Facility, she allegedly tried to get relatives to take out more insurance policies and also attempted to interfere with state witnesses, possibly with help from her lawyer.

Her bail has been delayed several times, and the state strongly opposes her release. The case has been compared to that of convicted kiIIer Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu. Kutumela is said to have shared insurance payouts with her co-accused, using companies like Absa, Standard Bank, and Old Mutual.

Families of the victims have called her “dangerous” and demanded justice. The bail hearing continues on 24 July, and more arrests may follow.
