"We don't have a youth problem! We have an adult problem. The youth did not create the circumstance they find themselves in. These young people are reacting to the adult problem. Society, adults, must prepare their young for citizenship and how to take part in their civic responsibilities." - Nhlanhla Zwana, CEO of the African Youth Development Fund (AYDF)

Democracy Works!

Democracy Works Foundation hosted an amazing dialogue on civic tech and engagement, promoting civil society participation as well as participation in democratic governance by youth and women.

We had people from various organisations contributing to the dialogue of supporting the youth and women to participate in democratic governance. The panel had Nhlanhla from UTD AYDF , Cllr Colleen Makhubele who is the Speaker of the Council from City of Joburg, Hlumelo Bhiko from and Khanya from

There was lot of learning from one another and food for thought, such as:

- “What should the content of civic education be?”
- “How do we define what it is to be a citizen in South Africa?”
- “How do we reinstate the urgency of voting?”
- “What is the quality of participation?”
- “How do we balance freedom and responsibility?” democracy
