The metaphor of time as a river that flows inexorably forward is misleading, argues cultural theorist Timotheus Vermeulen.
He draws on philosopher Walter Benjamin’s imagery to propose that temporal experience is something we can grip, turn and remould, closer to clay on a potter’s wheel than the linear river visualisation.
In the arts, time is something we can play with, using anticipation, gesture, rhythm and repetition to fracture its linear flow.
Time is not simply a background condition of our experience, but something we can use to sculpt and remake consciousness itself.
