Universities have lost the practical component of mining, leaving many graduates with degrees but little real-world exposure. Without hands-on experience especially in core areas like Drill and Blast operations graduates often step into the industry without truly understanding what mining is. Theory without practice leaves a dangerous gap. What do we do from here?

Mine managers who keep shafts open and running deserve their flowers and we must give them that…….becacuse closure of mines affects not just employees, but entire communities of people who depend on mining operations for their livelihoods. Operationally, we need mine managers who are people-centred leaders who understand that they hold the well-being of others in their hands. Responsible leadership in mining goes beyond production; it’s about sustaining lives, families, and communities.
