Airlink’s new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft entered service on 22 December, in time for the Christmas and New Year rush.

Airlink is the first carrier in Southern Africa to operate the state-of-the-art E195-E2s, which are powered by the super fuel-efficient Pratt & Whitney PW1009G Geared Turbo-Fan (GTF) engines.

The E195-E2s’ extended range in comparison with its predecessor model, will extend Airlink’s reach, creating new opportunities to connect more destinations and markets across sub-Saharan Africa.

BRM AERO has received EASA approval for the Bristell by BRM AERO B23 powered by the Rotax 916iS engine in the CS-23 category, adding the highest-power option to the B23 lineup and expanding its capabilities for training, touring, and demanding operations such as glider towing. As of the EASA approval date (December 17, 2025), the Bristell B23 is the world’s first EASA CS-23 approved aircraft equipped with the Rotax 916iS engine.

A persistent intra-African connectivity gap was highlighted during a panel discussion titled Driving Continental Collaboration Under SAATM at the recent African Airlines Association Annual General Assembly.

From a regulatory standpoint, measurable progress has been made since the Single African Air Transport Market was launched in 2018. Thirty-eight African states have signed with 26 signing Memoranda of Implementation. Together, these states account for close to 80 percent of Africa’s air traffic. AFCAC reports the development of more than 110 new intra-African routes, including 19 fifth-freedom routes, as well as 60 bilateral air services agreements modified and aligned with liberalisation principles.

Yet further progress is needed for these frameworks to translate into tangible connectivity gains and the realisation of SAATM’s core objectives: enabling Africans to move efficiently within Africa.

United has increased capacity on its Cape Town routes in response to rising demand during the South African summer holiday travel season.
Passenger bookings from Cape Town to the United States rose by 7 percent between 18 December and 6 January compared with the same period last year.

To meet this demand, United increased its Cape Town–New York/Newark service from three to four weekly flights during the peak holiday period.

TAAG outlines its roadmap for 2026 and the targets shaping its ambition for 2030.

The airline is consolidating operations at the new Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport, renewing its fleet, expanding its African and long-haul network, increasing digital sales performance and preparing for a new MRO capability in Angola.

These developments point to a defining phase of growth for TAAG - Linhas Aéreas de Angola and a strengthened role for Luanda as a regional and intercontinental hub.
