Around 200 documented refugees who had been camping outside the Durban Home Affairs offices were forced to leave in the early hours of Monday after police warned that they could not guarantee their safety amid fears of anti-immigrant protests.
The group, made up largely of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Uganda and Sudan, had been staying outside the offices since 21 May while seeking protection as anti-immigrant tensions escalated in parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
According to reports, police informed the refugees at around 10pm that they needed to leave the area by 4am due to a planned March and March event scheduled for Tuesday.
With no transport provided by the state, local activists assisted the refugees in relocating to Sherwood Community Hall, where thousands of other migrants and refugees had already gathered seeking safety.
Reports indicate that more than 8,000 people were camped in and around the hall by Tuesday, with many requesting repatriation to their home countries.
Civil society organisations say community members stepped in to provide tents, sanitation facilities and humanitarian support while government assistance remained limited.
Some refugees claim they were threatened, intimidated and assaulted after attempting to return to their homes despite possessing valid legal documentation allowing them to remain in South Africa.
Meanwhile, eThekwini Municipality says the repatriation of foreign nationals requesting to return home is underway, with several buses already departing for Malawi as immigration processes continue.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli visited the site as authorities work to address the growing humanitarian situation.
