With COP30 in Belém concluding weakly last week, failing to secure a real adaptation deal, a time-bound fossil fuel phase-out, or an actionable forest roadmap, information integrity for climate change is important now more than ever.

Ensuring diverse and pluralistic public interest information that is credible, accurate, transparent, and reliable is one of Moxii Africa's core missions. Doing so helps us combat mis- and dis-information which is a serious threat to climate change. Climate change has been labelled as the greatest crisis ever faced by our species. We are currently at the tipping point, with delayed climate action resulting in quite literally life-threatening consequences on the one side, and mitigation and adaptation measures through urgent action on the other.

Climate disinformation poses a significant risk to climate action and may tip us towards unstoppable consequences. If we don't take the relevant actions we will move past a point of no return.

Read our Climate Disinformation: Consequences and Soliutions discussion document for more information on unpacking the effects of disinformation on climate change and environmental harms:

SLAPPback : A guide to fighting SLAPP suits and other abuses of court processes in South Africa.

Last week, Moxii Africa ( formely Media Monitoring Africa) launched SLAPPback.org.za , a website provides information on forms of legal action that are designed to silence criticism and stifle free speech, and offers guidance on how to respond to these processes effectively.

It aims to raise awareness of common forms of weaponisation of court processes in SA, and strategies to defend freedom of expression and publication participation.

As we are almost coming to the end of the Web Rangers Anti-Bullying Awareness Month, we’ve focused on equipping young people, parents, and guardians with the knowledge and tools to prevent and respond to cyberbullying.

Throughout the month, we covered understanding online harassment, including mean messages, rumours, and harmful content; recognising the signs of bullying, such as changes in mood, withdrawal from friends, or secrecy about online activity; and how to handle bullying safely

[ ]: Five key takeaways from the Competition Commission report into Big Tech and the SA media

The South African Competition Commission’s Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry (MDPMI) final report was released on Thursday, 13 November, and like the provisional report, it offers some stark findings.

The inquiry looked at monopolies and news media sustainability, the impact of AI, the models used by digital platforms, the advertising environment and context, and crucially, the rise and threat of misinformation and disinformation.

The article provides a few key takeaways that will reverberate in the sector for years to come.

ANTI-BULLYING AWARENESS MONTH

Be Your Child's Safety Net.

Violent content doesn’t stay in isolated corners of the Internet, it often goes viral within minutes. Your child doesn’t need to have an Instagram or TikTok account for bullying videos, like those recently involving students from Milnerton High School, to reach them.
Friends might share such clips through WhatsApp, or they may stumble across them while watching YouTube on a family TV.

NB‼️ Parents and caregivers who interact with Web Rangers’ content stand a chance to win one of ten R500 Takealot vouchers, as a fun incentive to stay connected and informed.

Thank you to everyone who joined our SLAPPback webinar!🫶

We unpacked what SLAPP suits are, how laws are weaponised to silence and censor, and the tactics used by those who seek to shut down public participation.
A special thank you to Advocate Steven Budlender and Kgothatso Mampa for sharing powerful insights, examples, and legal expertise.

We also launched an important new public resource : the SLAPPs website, created to help the public, activists, journalists, and organisations better understand and challenge SLAPP suits in South Africa.
