: Africa needs a voice on information integrity and media freedom

As leaders of the world’s major economies prepare for the November G20 Johannesburg Summit, champions of South Africa’s journalism industry are working to ensure that information integrity and media freedom are not overlooked.

The two issues are inextricably linked, argue Media Monitoring Africa and the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF). Together, the two organisations are spearheading Media20 (M20) in the lead-up to the G20 talks, to highlight the issues.

Know News is an easy-to-use news tool by Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) that helps people check the credibility of any news offering website on their computer. The main objective of the tool and initiative is to defend credible news media and people in general from falling prey to mis/disinformation peddlers.

What makes the initiative more interesting is that the
public who are consumers of news are mainly the ones who report news offering websites that they think are suspicious for classification by MMA.

We are in court in Gqeberha with Power Law for this case: SAHRC v Lagardien.

The case, which centers on the placement of a sign and the dissemination of information within a WhatsApp group alleged to incite harm against the LGBTQI+ community, presents nuanced challenges regarding contemporary communication methods.

MMA remains committed to upholding media freedom while ensuring it does not infringe upon the dignity and equality of all individuals.

We believe the court's decision in this matter will contribute significantly to a more tolerant and inclusive society.

MADOAT🗞️

MADOAT is an innovative online media advocacy tool designed to spotlight the best and worst practices in media reporting on children. It aims to promote greater accountability among editors and journalists by encouraging ethical and accurate coverage of issues affecting children.

This platform not only advocates for responsible journalism but also empowers children by providing them a space to engage directly with the media.

Over the past year, the number of MADs has significantly decreased compared to previous years, which is a positive development. This decline indicates an improvement in the quality of media reporting on children’s issues

Insights to Incitement (i3)

Insights into Incitement or i3 is an MMA tool developed to help detect and track degrees of incitement of violence on social media and online.

The objective of I3 is to develop an intelligent system that analyses text data such as social media posts, articles, political party commentaries, and public complaints to assess and rank the level of potential incitement to harm.
The system uses a custom classifier and sentiment analysis to rank each piece of analysed text on a RAG scale (Red, Amber, Green) by severity of potential incitement.
