Moxii Africa

Moxii Africa Media Monitoring Africa is rebranding to Moxii Africa - Striving for Open and Trusted Information.

Media Matters is the social media platform for Media Monitoring Africa. We want to start conversations around media freedom, media ethics, and the general state of the media in South Africa and beyond

01/10/2026

As local elections approach, digital disinformation, online harassment, and targeted hate speech increase significantly across social media platforms.

“What’s Rot on Real411” is a bi-weekly live webzine/webinar designed to track high-volume disinformation trends, analyze real reported cases, and equip media, civil society, and voters with practical tools to spot digital harms.

Hosted by Real411 Secretariat members, each session acts as both a live public dialogue and a high-yield of content engine for social media distribution.
This is one session of many , do not miss out.

[DEXTER]: 2026 Local Government Elections Media Coverage Insights Dashboard 🤖

The Local Government Elections are 34 days away.
But how much of the news is actually about them?

Between 21 and 27 September 2026, Moxii Africa monitored 10,349 media items. Only 144 were about the elections. That is 1.4% of all coverage, or roughly 1 in every 72 stories.

Why does that matter?
Voters make decisions based on what they see, hear and read. When election coverage is thin, it leaves space for rumour, speculation and misinformation to fill the gap.

This is why we track it.
At Moxii Africa, we strive for open and trusted information. That means asking not only what is being said about the elections, but how much, by whom and what's missing.

[IN PICTURES]

The Article 12 working group came together to discuss climate disinformation and how children’s voices are excluded in policy making decisions around this issue.

They worked together on an upcoming Comic book Vol 5. This allows them to address important issues in a fun and interactive way.

This is important because at Moxii we believe in an open and trusted information and if children’s voices and health is considered that forms part of a path to a better information ecosystem .

🧠💬 WORDS MATTER!

Learning about harmful online behaviour doesn’t have to be a lecture sometimes, it starts with a game. 🎯

Today, learners were divided into groups and challenged to describe key terms to their teammates without saying the word itself.

From hate speech and anti-foreigner sentiment to cyberbullying, the game encouraged learners to think critically about the words we use, what they mean, and the impact they can have on others. 🗣️🤝

Because understanding these concepts is the first step towards recognising harmful content, challenging it, and making more responsible choices both online and offline. 📱🌍

Words matter. What we say matters. And how we use our words can make a difference.

🧵 Why are we here? 🧠📱

Because misinformation doesn’t stay online.

What we see, believe and share can shape how we see one another, fuel fear, reinforce harmful stereotypes and sometimes contribute to real-world harm.

That’s why conversations like these matter. 👇🏾

1️⃣ Learn before misinformation spreads.
We’re exploring how to pre-bunk misinformation before it takes hold and debunk harmful narratives when they do.

It’s about giving young people the tools to pause, question and think critically before hitting “share.”

2️⃣ Challenge harmful narratives. 🌍🤝
Misinformation can contribute to anti-foreigner sentiment and harmful stereotypes.

By responding with facts, empathy and critical thinking, we can encourage more responsible digital engagement.

3️⃣ Empower young people. 📱🧠
Children and young people navigate digital spaces every day. They deserve the knowledge and confidence to recognise harmful content, question what they encounter and make informed decisions online.

4️⃣ Remember: online can echo offline.
A post, comment, video or statistic might seem harmless but the narratives we amplify can influence how communities understand and treat one another.

So, why are we here?

👉🏾 To ask difficult questions.
👉🏾 To learn.
👉🏾 To challenge harmful narratives.
👉🏾 To think before we share.
👉🏾 To help build safer, more informed online communities.

🌍 We all have a role to play in breaking the cycle.
