It's been three weeks since my mom passed, and I've been feeling so guilty because I haven't really cried or let myself think about her too much.

I've been avoiding it all, and it makes me feel like there's something wrong with me.

​But I'm learning that this is normal.

​Everyone told me about the stages of grief, but no one really told me that the first stage is often just... numb.

I think my brain is trying to protect me. If I let all the pain in at once, I don't know if I could handle it. Avoiding those thoughts and tears is my mind's way of pacing the grief, letting it in when I'm ready.

​I'm trying to be gentle with myself. The guilt doesn't help. I know my love for my mom isn't measured by how many times I cry or how often I say her name right now. It's in the memories we shared, and that will never go away.

The tears will come on their own schedule, and I need to let that be okay.

I thought I knew how a broken heart felt. I've been hurt so many times, but this is different.

I didn't just lose my mom, I lost the only person who actually understands me.

I lost my best friend and confidant.
