Drain Brain Experience

The Drain Brain Experience consists of four members. We are an alternative electric rock, poetry and blues band, based in Soweto.

Our lyrics are of a controversial nature, highly influenced by the black consciousness movement, but represented in a contemporary sense, engaged in the narrative of love, war, socio-politics, poverty and discrimination.

Part and parcel to our music, is the performance element - which is filled with theatrics (in a disturbing sense) that cause tension in the spaces we perform in, these effects are created by distorted guitars, voice effects, and hard rock drumming.

Artist Alert: PG_13 an art collective that consists of a guitarist with a jazz influence, drum and bass with a lot of groove, a combination of evocative poetry and ancestral awakening vocals.

Their self-composed material is aimed at forcing society to question issues we have neglected for the sake of peace. We are conscious of who we are, where we come from, and where we are headed.

Check out: It Has To Be Jazz is a trademark of Elephant Maseko (Pty) Ltd and it is run as a project that places particular emphasis on creating a conducive platform for the professional youth jazz composers and musicians who have done incredible work in jazz and music in general. The initial scope covers the SADC region with plans to spread to the rest of the African continent. Where opportunities become available, the scope of the project will be extended accordingly.

A lot of work has gone into ensuring market visibility and we are proud to be recognised partners of International Jazz Day which has been entrusted to Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz by UNESCO as a lead organisation. Growth has also seen the best of the best South African youth in jazz collaborate with the youth from Botswana and Zimbabwe who feature in three of our six CDs. We have also been graced with the presence of guests from Malawi and Ghana in our live performances.

What exactly is Imprimatur?

Imprimatur is a digital neighbourhood that exposes non-mainstream African millennial artists to a discerning audience. This online music community will initially take the form of an interactive, mobile-responsive website. An essential part of ensuring its success is live music experiences as well as visuals (e.g. album art; or the documentary that we produced ourselves etc.) What is primarily being addressed is that talent levels typically showcased in the main media channels that is mostly consumed in society does not reflect talent levels in South Africa (and Africa as a whole).

So the quid pro quo for the artists is building an egaged audience; And for the listeners, it’s a different kind of listening experience. But the real magic in both of these is Imprimatur’s quest to accelerate and enlarge the scale and impact of African millennial music. What the consequences will be is unknown, but that excites me. It’s dope that we can build a digital environment that is the metropolis of human activity, a vehicle for harnessing the thoughts, emotions and skills of these artists. Everytime I log onto Imprimatur, I feel like a mad scientist: “Mojeaux just uploaded a song, I wonder what he is saying in it” “JazzCats just liked a song, is this their taste” “Ememkay’s song has 10k plays, people really dig it”. It’s just so engaging.

The main product will be experienced on www.imprimaturworld.com. The key features of the site are as follows: Users will take the form of either artists or listeners. Artists will have the ability to upload their recordings to the site. Listeners will be able to consume the artists’ work. It is also interactive in that artists and listeners will have direct relationships and conversations with each pother (artists to listener and vice versa; listener to listener and artist to artist). Users will be able to create playlists across the genres and have the ability to share them. The site will also allow users and artists to share experiences (short video clips, photos, info about gigs etc). Listeners and fans will have the power in this digital community. It will be the gold-standard of non-mainstream music in SA and the continent - the roadmap is to build it as the number 1 destination for this.

What does the word “Imprimatur” mean?

Imprimatur means “a person’s authoritative approval”. The word has its origins in ancient religious civilisation. Most notably, “imprimatur” means the official license given by the Roman Catholic church to print a religious book. When we build Imprimatur as the community most accurately reflective of African millennial sound, it is the artists and listeners in this community that will be the “imprimaturs” for what should be recognised as modern, high-quality African expression.

Why Imprimatur?

Every important evolution in human existence has a strong media component to it. Music is an important story-telling vehicle. I believe that music plays an important part in re-writing the African narrative, from an authentically, sincerely African voice. Imprimatur reframes the mainstream discourse and stereotypes around what a young, talented African musician sounds like. My ambition is to create an “art bank” that captures the musical zeitgeist of our era.

Hey Yal,

Here is another dope Artist Alert!!!

IAmSofaya is a female vocalist from Johannesburg. Anyone who has seen her perform live is familiar with how her powerful voice carresses urban-soul instrumentation.

This songstress draws influences from Miriam Makeba, Brenda Fassie and Motown music. Imprimatur has had the privlege of hearing her latest E.P. titled “Mina Nawe", in it she showcases her musical range and it is evident just how far she has come, as well as how blown away audiences will be with her style.

Her ballad “Soka Lam” is currently well-received on several national radio stations in South Africa.
