Three South African photographers illustrate the personal and professional journeys of three entrepreneurs living and working in Cape Town’s historically disadvantaged areas, formerly known as 'townships'. The photographs document how the entrepreneurs have overcome persistent inequalities to realise their passions, sustain themselves and their families, and ultimately bring change in their communities.

Thanks to the emergence of the financial technologies sector – fintech – and mobile phones in Africa, these devices have become real service delivery platforms. One example is JUMO, a start-up which opens access to credit and savings in real time via smartphones.

"I’m originally from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. I arrived in South Africa in 2011 when I was 15 to complete my high school studies. I was brought here by my aunt and lived with her in Johannesburg. My mother passed away in 2001, my father still lives in Zimbabwe.

Hubert and Jeanne Mwangaza have both been HIV-positive since they married and started a family together years ago. Now, they have three children, and all of them are HIV-free.
Is it a medical miracle?

A photo/text story on IOM's Responsible Minerals Trade project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The project helps certifying 3Ts+Gold mines as conflict-free therefore contributing to take mines off the hands of armed groups and generating tax revenue for the government.

A couple of hundred makeshift homes made of recovered wood and blue tarpaulin roofs house around 1,200 miners, who work 12 hours shifts in an artisanal cassiterite (tin) mine, just a few hundred metres away.

Ernest (16), Bahati (9), and Isa (7) from Burundi live with their foster mother Alice Mwadjuma in the camp, north-west Tanzania.
UNICEF and IRC are helping identify unaccompanied who, like Ernest, have been separated from both parents and other relatives and are not being cared for by an adult. These children are placed in the care of foster families who help bring some routine back into their lives by taking care of their daily needs and providing an environment where they feel safe and protected.

Meet Sophia, Juma and Christer from Mbeya, Tanzania. They will restore your faith in humanity. They are UNICEF's 'fit families' - families who foster vulnerable children. They do so purely out of their goodwill, asking nothing in return. Christa and Juma take care of 1 year old Loveness who was thrown in a pit latrine by her biological mother shortly after birth. Sophia takes care of Emanuel, a 17 year old boy who has run away from home, spent three years on the streets and was eventually found guilty of theft and sent to a rehabilitation centre.
This is the purest form of kindness and unselfishness - to make sure that no child is without the love and warmth of a family and can grow to reach their full potential. Photo credit: Chiara Frisone

An AIDS-free generation once seemed like a far-off dream. But, now, the world has what it takes to make this dream a reality. Advancements in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV have greatly decelerated the rate of new infections in babies in low- and middle-income countries. However, the...
